Biomathematics and Statistics Scotland (BioSS) seeks a statistical assistant with an interest in plant and crop sciences. BioSS supports sustainable food production by providing an analysis and reporting service for the UK Crop Variety Trials system. BioSS has an international reputation for methodological development in statistics, mathematical modelling, bioinformatics and statistical genomics. We have over 50 staff and students at four locations across Scotland, developing and applying quantitative methods in agriculture, ecology, the environment, and human health and nutrition. We collaborate widely with other leading UK and international institutions, working on research to tackle pressing global problems, such as the impacts of climate change, emerging health challenges, and threats to food and water security. Through our work in research, consultancy and training, BioSS aims to provide a better understanding of uncertainty, variation and risk.

We are seeking a statistical assistant to join us to provide support to the BioSS UK Crop Variety Trials team through duties including generation of field plans using in-house software, analysis of data from trials, compilation of reports, and communication of these to relevant parties. As well as technical skills, we are therefore also seeking to recruit a statistical assistant with excellent communication skills, who is enthusiastic about communicating with different audiences and collaborators.

Main Purpose of Job

  • To provide statistical support to the BioSS UK Crop Variety Trials team through processing of variety trial data.
  • To undertake a variety of administrative or statistical tasks required to support BioSS staff.

Main Duties of Postholder

To ensure smooth and efficient functioning of the BioSS variety trial system, through:

  • Generation of designs for field trials using our in-house software, to optimize statistical properties whilst bearing in mind physical constraints, and transmit these plans to trials officers;
  • Analysis of individual trials, compilation of result reports, identification of issues and transmission of these to trial officers, trial coordinators and inspectors;
  • Analysis over trials, compilation of result reports, identification of issues and transmission of these to trial coordinators and inspectors;
  • Assist the Band D post in compilation of decision reports for potato Variety Listing;
  • Recognize difficult issues that arise and pass these on to more senior colleagues;
  • Maintain the content of our variety trial web portals for clients;
  • Maintain and improve our processes and the documentation of these;
  • Take an active role in the upgrading of our software, working with our programmers;
  • Provide a first point of contact for trials officers, trials inspectors, trials coordinators, funders, and statistical colleagues at NIAB, providing guidance as necessary.

To provide additional support to BioSS, depending on skillset, which may include:

  • Statistical support to colleagues working on funded projects;
  • Updating the content of the BioSS website and its intranet;
  • Contributing to our external and internal communications;
  • Providing administrative support for our training courses.

Person Specification

Education/Experience/Skills

Essential

  • Higher(s) or similar with a quantitative component.
  • Excellent inter-personal skills with colleagues/clients/partners at all levels.
  • Needs to take a positive, proactive, and encouraging attitude to work.
  • Must be comfortable with, and competent in the use of, computers in an office environment.
  • Must be competent in using Excel to store and transfer information between users.
  • Excellent communicator on a one-to-one basis.
  • Well organised, with the ability to prioritise tasks.
  • Ability to plan, initiate and follow up on tasks to completion.
  • Ability to recognise when to seek advice if required.
  • Remain composed/calm with focus on priorities when conflicting demands arise or under time pressure.
  • Must be capable and accurate at data processing, with a keen eye for detail. 
  • Needs to be flexible and willing to help out as required. Must be willing to take holidays at a time that minimises disruption to the variety trial function.

Desirable

  • Degree-level qualification with a quantitative component.
  • Experience of undertaking of routine statistical tasks.
  • Ability to communicate statistical concepts in a clear manner.
  • Competency in the use of statistical software.
  • Experience with the Linux operating system.
  • Experience of use of databases.
  • Experience of content-managed websites.
