Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced orthopaedic practitioner to join the orthopaedic outpatient team at LGI. If you are dedicated and passionate about developing your professional practice and the service then we would welcome your application for this post.
The post holder will be responsible for providing a high quality and compassionate service to all patients, they will be accountable for escalating any complications to the multi-disciplinary team that may impact on the patients agreed plan of care.
The post holder will provide a service to all wards including major trauma wards, and theatres for specialised casting. The post holder will advise and support adult/paediatric patients and families in relation to managing their cast/splint/brace, on-going positioning and post intervention complications.
The post holder will be based at LGI but with a requirement to provide service across all 5 sites working autonomously. The current service is delivered between the hours of Monday to Friday but will include some evening and weekend working to cover service demand.
Qualifications - Recognised Orthopaedic Practitioner Certificate (BOA /SOTN)
Experience - 1 Year post qualification working in a plaster room setting either in an out patient setting or in accident and emergency.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be accountable for all aspects of direct & indirect care of patients requiring casts/splints/bracing and wound care; providing high quality care and assistance to patients and their carer during their attendance to the department. The post holder will escalate to medical staff any complications or issues that may impact on the patients agreed plan of care.
The post holder will advise and support adult/paediatric patients and families in relation to managing their cast/splint/brace, on-going positioning and any complications to be aware of following interventions verbally and by producing written information.
The post holder will work autonomously within Trust and National casting guidelines reporting to Senior Sister/Charge Nurse.
The post holder will be required to direct/instruct/supervise trainee orthopaedic practitioners and other clinical staff as appropriate medical and nursing, demonstrating high standards.
The post holders will work together to plan workload ensuring effective and efficient utilisation of resources on a daily basis supported by department manager/Sister/Charge nurse.

You will expected to deliver effective levels of communication to all members of the MDT, offering expert specialist advice to clinicians pertaining to fracture and casting management verbally and in writing using highly developed interpersonal skills, these include but not exhaustive of persuasive, motivational, negotiating and reassurance.
To provide specialist advice pertaining to fracture, casting management. This includes condition related information for patients and other clients. This will include vulnerable, adults, elderly and children.

You will be required to work in theatres alongside surgeons to apply moulded, children's spinal jackets (EDF Cast), Hip spicas and specialist children clinic's for ponsetti casting. As well as the following:
Provide advice to patients on potential complications of casting, how to contact the department: take remedial action to rectify any complications/problems including referring to clinician if required.
Accept direct referrals from clinicians, virtual fracture clinic, AHPs and wards for casting treatment from other disciplines, and refer patients to clinicians as required.
Mould, apply cast, wedge cast and manipulate displaced fractures depending on patients individual needs for adults or children.
Deliver high standards of patient care and experience at all times.
Maintain a safe working environment, reporting incidents, accidents & complaints
Provide wound care for example managing open wounds, removal of pin and pin site care, removal of sutures
Understand the need to maintain & respect patient confidentiality
Share knowledge and skills around safe casting techniques with other professional staff as appropriate.
Record accurate information in electronic records regarding care and treatment in accordance with Trust policies and guidelines

Facilitate specialised training in LTHT for staff groups such as ED and supervise clinical support workers/trainee orthopaedic technicians that are not on the orthopaedic technician register.
Participate in annual mandatory training
Participate in annual performance appraisal
Ensure continuous personal and professional development
Undertake duties in different wards/departments as & when required by service demands
Accept direct referrals from clinicians, virtual fracture clinic, AHPs and wards for casting treatment from other disciplines, and refer patients to clinicians as required.
Undertake clinical audits and report finding back to MDT
Review and utilise x-rays for safe removal of metal work/K-wires.
Frequent standing, sitting, walking, kneels and crouches to attend to patient needs
Patient care ( applying plaster casts) including moving and handling of plaster caste liquid during application and frequent need to hold limbs during application of caste. May be exposed to patients with infections. Wearing appropriate PPE in line with Trust guidelines.
Moving & Handling of patients and equipment on a daily basis including assistance to move and reposition patients from chairs to couches.
Using specialist equipment such as plaster saws.

The BCC/BOA Course ( 60 SCQF level 8 Diploma points) 4 GCSEs including English and Maths Workplace Assessing Qualification 2 years post BOA course completion experience.

Highly developed clinical skills and underpinning knowledge of all aspects of wound care, casting, splinting and orthotics within orthopaedics and a recognised orthopaedic technician qualification Knowledge of all types of plastering materials Knowledge of application of splints, braces and frames. Knowledge to be able to provide technical advice to patients, relatives and other healthcare professionals, including complex information regarding on-going care and treatment of their affected limb Knowledge and ability to recognise complications following orthopaedic interventions and appropriate escalation to the medical team of life threating complications. Knowledge of Infection prevention and care principals and practice Knowledge of wound healing process and choice of appropriate dressings
