Haemoglobinopathy Liaison Sister

Job summary

It is an exciting time to join the Haemoglobinopathy team at Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust as we look forward to moving to the ultra modern Midland Metropolitan University Hospital this autumn, and for the first time we are looking at an integrated community and hospital Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Service.

The team are looking for a friendly and dynamic nurse to join the team in a liaison nurse role, an integral part in facilitating the transition between paediatric services, but increasingly bridging the gap between hospital and home too. We are looking for someone with experience of caring for people with haemoglobinopathy conditions or awareness of the challenges they face. You will need to have excellent communication skills, and be competent in venepuncture, cannulation and the use of CVADs. Teaching, counselling or prescribing qualifications are desirable but a willingness to develop is essential. Main duties of the job

All aspects of care of the haemoglobinopathy patient: screening and counselling on diagnosis.

Clinically supporting patients with their well being as an outpatient, delivering day treatments and managing the unwell patient.

Coordinating and participating in regional MDTs, teaching and raising awareness throughout hospital and community.

Qualifications

Essential

First level nurse ENB 998 ( teaching and assessing ) SLAIP, D32 or D33 or equivalent course Venepuncture and Central Venous access device competence

Desirable

Leadership course / qualification Haemoglobinopathy course / Qualification

Experience

Essential

Appropriate acute post registration experience Involvement in teaching and learning initiatives. Evidence of supporting others in a clinical environment. Experience of audit initiatives and other quality initiatives. Able to demonstrate commitment to high quality patient care. Experience and evidence in implementing and managing change. Evidence of implementing research based practice.

Desirable

Relevant haemoglobinopathy experience. Care of patients with chronic illnesses. Experience of liaison or community work. Nurse prescriber or willingness to undertake should the role demand this.
