We are looking for an enthusiastic, flexible, and committed Dietitian who will work as part of our Multidisciplinary Diabetes Team based at the Stephanie Marks Centre at Ashford and St Peters Hospital. The Diabetes Dietitian team provide expert Diabetes dietary advice to patients and their carers including structured education and other education relevant to individual management of diabetes. There is an opportunity for training within this post with the post holder working towards competencies to enable them to manage the dietary care planning for patients using Diabetes Insulin pumps, glucose monitors and hybrid closed loop systems,in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team.

The team members work closely with the Diabetes colleagues, Dietitians, other health care professionals, carers, patients and family members to optimise glycaemic control and improve long-term health and quality of life.

Main duties of the job

The Diabetes Dietetic team form part of the Ashford and St Peter's Dietetic Department to provide nutrition and dietetic services to patients and their carers including structured education and other education relevant to individual management of diabetes. This role will include working with the Band 7 Diabetes Dietitian to manage, coordinate and support the Insulin Pump service for the Trust, in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team. The post holder will provide Diabetes dietary advice to patients and their carers including structured education and other education relevant to individual management of diabetes.

The successful candidate will take an active role within the general functioning of the Dietetic Department, including contributing to student training.

Flexibility, good organisational and prioritisation skills are essential to this role. The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate excellent team working skills and enthusiasm.

Job responsibilities

To provide expert Diabetes dietary advice to patients and their carers including structured education and other education relevant to individual management of diabetes with particular emphasis on calculation of carbohydrate intake and appropriate adjustments to insulin doses as agreed with the Diabetes team and in line with written policy With support and training to take a role in supporting the Insulin Pump service for the Trust, providing advice concerning the dietary care planning for patients using diabetes Insulin pumps, glucose monitors and hybrid closed loop systems in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team. To support specialist consultant clinics: General Diabetes clinics, Diabetes complication clinics, Young Adult Diabetes clinics, Gestational Diabetes clinics, Transitional Diabetes clinics (children transferring to young adult clinics) Contribute to dietary policy development in diabetes and to work as an integral part of the Diabetes Team, contributing to the policies for the team as a whole. Educate and train other health care professionals, junior dietitians and dietetic students To support student placements The Trust is moving towards 7 day working and this post will be expected to participate in providing the Dietetic service across 7 days, including extended hours and weekend working Person Specification

Qualifications and Further Training

Essential

Degree in Dietetics (or equivalent qualification) Current registration with HCPC

Desirable

Evidence of relevant post registration training relevant to clinical speciality Diabetes education training for Type 1 & Type 2 Diabetes, Insulin Pump Therapy Course, Carbohydrate counting course Counselling skills course/ Motivational interview training

Experience

Essential

Relevant experience in clinical dietetics to include working with patients with all types of diabetes Experience of working in an NHS secondary care setting with both in and outpatient services Experience of multidisciplinary team working

Desirable

Previous experience working in a Diabetes service including experience of insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitoring.

Knowledge

Essential

Clinical practice and issues relating to the delivery of dietetic services Understanding of the different needs of patients with Diabetes NICE guidelines for Diabetes and their relevance to dietetic practice

Desirable

Diabetes therapies including detailed knowledge of insulin, insulin delivery, blood glucose monitoring and oral agents

Skills

Essential

Ability to communicate effectively with patients and with other staff to ensure that their care, treatment and support are not compromised Flexibility and adaptability to respond to changing situations and timescales Prioritisation and time management skills Presentation skills and ability to present to both individuals and groups, inc large audiences
