Job summary

Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to recruit a Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist, on a permanent contract, who will be responsible for treating children and adolescents up to the age of 18 at the Parkview clinic.

This service is part of a larger in-patient service, which also includes a General Adolescent unit, Specialist Eating Disorder Unit and as assessment unit.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide senior specialist psychiatric input and medical leadership within an established multidisciplinary in-patient team and have a central role in delivering psychiatric assessment and treatment for in-patients and their families, as well as contributing to providing psychiatric & medical risk management.

The consultant psychiatrist will support the in-patient team, medical lead and other professional leads with quality improvement & clinical governance activities.

The post holder will also have a close working relationship with other consultant psychiatrists and medical colleagues based at the Parkview clinic.

They will offer specialist consultation and peer supervision to medical and non-medical colleagues within the clinical team including the supervision of junior doctors.

On a more strategic level, they will relate to the leadership and management structures of the Tier 4 and Mental Health Services.

From an overall professional perspective, they will support the Medical Lead, Medical Director for FTB and MH services and Chief Medical Officer of Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust (BWC). In turn all are ultimately responsible within the Trust to the Chief Executive Officer

MBBS or equivalent medical qualification CCT holder in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry or equivalent (or within 6 months of becoming eligible for CCT) Current full registration with the GMC (or eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment) Wide range of experience in child and adolescent psychiatry including tier 4 experience GMC Licence to practise MRC Psych (or equivalent) Approval (or eligible for approval) under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act Eligible to work in the UK Provision of high-quality mental services, as trainee or consultant A broad range of experience in Child & Adolescent psychiatry and working with multi-disciplinary teams Experience of assessment, treatment and medical monitoring of patients and their families Evidence of capability of building strong relationships within a complex referral system Evidence of being a strong team member with excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills Evidence of commitment to personal, professional development Evidence of the ability to cope with unexpected /urgent clinical situations Evidence of ability to respond to and professional development Evidence of the ability to cope with unexpected /urgent clinical situations Evidence of ability to respond to and cope effectively with change Evidence of ability to effectively prioritise clinically/managerially/administratively Able to manage duties under the MHA, including assessment of patients in Place of Safety detained under Section 136 Experience with the treatment of patients with complex mental disorders, neurodevelopmental conditions, emotional trauma and emerging personality disorders Management of patients under CPA Knowledge & experience of clinical audit Ability to work within a collaborative multidisciplinary framework, and to share leadership responsibilities with senior colleagues of other professions Ability to work across teams and disciplinary boundaries in a collaborative style Excellent communication skills, diplomacy and tact.
