PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:
As we continue to grow, we are seeking a talented and ambitious Associate to join our dynamic Shipping team. The role is due to outstanding client wins and growth within the team. The Shipping team provides robust legal support to advise our clients on various maritime and shipping related matters. The role is designed for bold legal professionals who are eager to develop their expertise in the niche specialist area of shipping law and play a key role in the success of our clients' operations and our firms' growth.
THE TEAM:
Our Shipping team is comprised of highly skilled professionals known for their deep understanding of the maritime sector and their ability to navigate complex legal challenges. The team works on a broad range of issues, including but not limited to shipbuilding contracts, charter party advice, cargo claims, marine insurance, international trade matters and ocean freight agreements, ship sale and purchase, offshore commercial contracts and ship registration. As a member of this team, you will be working in a collaborative environment that values knowledge sharing and continuous learning. Our specialist Shipping subject-matter experts are supported with our full-service capability in relevant fields such as procurement, banking and international arbitration.
WHAT TO EXPECT IN THE ROLE:
You will have direct interaction with domestic and international clients, providing them with strategic legal advice tailored to their unique needs within the shipping industry. You will handle and support a variety of cases, primarily transactional and advisory, while also involving complex shipping disputes and claims. You will be advising clients on regulatory compliance matters related to maritime law, ensuring they are informed of and adhere to international maritime regulations. Draft, review, and negotiate a range of shipping contracts and agreements, providing clear and concise legal advice to safeguard our clients' interests. Clients include Scottish and UK government departments, offshore wind-farm developers, vessel owners and charterers, cargo interests, and oilfield services businesses in Europe, the Middle East and the Caspian Sea.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Qualified to practice law in Scotland with 0-3 years post-qualification experience in shipping law or a related field such as Commercial Contracts / Non-Contentious Construction / Corporate. A strong academic record with a degree in law. Demonstrated interest and understanding of the shipping industry and maritime law. Excellent analytical, communication, presentation and negotiation skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities and work efficiently under tight deadlines.
