MSIEU provides underwriting and claims solutions to commercial Japanese and non-Japanese clients around the world and specialises in providing property, casualty, and marine insurance products and services.

JOB OBJECTIVE/SUMMARY

This successful post-holder will assist the Class Underwriter and work within the underwriting team to write business in line with the underwriting strategy to achieve MISEU’s business plan.

Exercising your strong relationship and negotiation skills, you will be responsible for negotiating renewals and new business with brokers and clients. You will also contribute to the continuing development of the department’s technical expertise and processes and be comfortable in contributing to the development and training of the underwriting assistants.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

Underwriting

Underwrite new business and renewals within a range of Property/Casualty/Construction risks whilst adhering to:

Underwriting Authorities and Guidelines. Reinsurance Protections. Risk Engineering Guidelines. Active communication and involvement in claims matters to help refine underwriting approach to deals and manage exposures. Ensure that policy records are maintained in accordance with standards.

Relationship Management

Develop and maintain external contacts with:

Insureds Brokers Facultative Reinsurers

Develop and maintain internal contacts with:

MSIEU Departments International Department Risk Engineering

Compliance

Support the embedding of the risk management framework within the underwriting team Ensure adherence and compliance with relevant controls, policies, risk, regulatory and legal requirements.

Projects

Undertake and manage projects as required by the Class Underwriter / Senior Management.

KEY SKILLS REQUIRED

Excellent communication, influencing and negotiation skills. Good level technical understanding of Property/Casualty/Construction Insurance. Decisive in nature, displaying good judgement in decisions and taking accountability. Ability to communicate at all levels (both written and verbal). Approachable and supportive. Ability to focus and produce work under pressure. Computer literate, including intermediate MS Excel and Word and ability to use reporting and presentation tools.

EXPERIENCE

A proven track record and strong reputation within underwriting including a strong technical underwriting background across at least Property and Casualty classes.

ACII qualified or part qualified and working towards full qualification (preferable).

With the implementation of the SM&CR (Senior Managers & Certification Regime), the Financial Services and Markets Act gave the FCA new powers to write conduct rules and apply them to all employees within a firm.
