About the Directorate
Barnet Public Health is an innovative, dynamic and friendly team. The Team have a mix of backgrounds and a breadth and depth of skills and experience. We have a strategic and operational approach, working with many teams across the Council, including transport, housing, sports and leisure, as well as with other system partners such as the NHS and a variety of community organisations. We directly commission services such as sexual health and smoking cessation services and lead the response to COVID-19 in Barnet this past year. We are now focusing on the recovery process.

About the role
This is an Apprenticeship in Public Health lasting for 3 years. During this time you will be attached to the Health in All Policies function of the team, learning about how to put health into policy, understand how the environment can impact on the population health.

Health in All Policies (HiAP) is a collaborative approach to improving the health of all people by incorporating health considerations into policymaking across various sectors. The decisions of local government can have wide ranging impacts including on health and well being. HIAP aims to ensure that these decisions and future policy considerations take health and wellbeing into account. Examples of HiAP work include high fat, high sugar advertising, active travel, air quality and tackling poor housing.

This is a fixed term position for 3 years. The post is suitable for someone with wishing to undertake an Apprenticeship in Public Health with a study requirement of 3 years gaining the degree BA Public Health - provider to be confirmed.
You will focus on the food plan, air quality and active travel in the first instance but may be asked to do work in other areas.

About you
We are looking for a keen self starter who has an interest in public health. You do not need to know about the areas you will be working in, but you do need to demonstrate that you can investigate them and present the information you learn. You may have voluntary or work experience which demonstrates your IT skills and how you can manage a project. You will need to be able to present information and use good communication skills. You will be working as part of the team, and will have to manage learning and working at the same time.
The rewards to this apprenticeship are significant, you will gain a degree and be able to apply to become a Public Health Practitioner. You wlll also gain experience in an important area of public health.
You will need to have GCSE passes in English and Maths or the equivalent, in order to apply.
