Job summary

This is a whole-time locum post in Gynaecology. It is based at the Liverpool Women'sNHS Foundation Trust with sessions at Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. We are looking for a keen and enthusiastic applicant to join the current Gynae Oncology department. The job plan will be tailored to the skill set of the successful applicant.

This post is designed to strengthen the existing team of Consultants who provide Gynaecological Cancer care to the women of Liverpool and the surrounding areas of Merseyside, Cheshire and North-Wales.

The Gynae Oncology department supports a population base of million covering Merseyside and Cheshire. With over 500 cancer referrals each year, the Liverpool Women's Hospital is one of the five busiest Gynae Oncology centres in England.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will work alongside our team of consultant nurses and general gynaecologists who run the rapid access clinics to facilitate prompt diagnosis in addition to providing a link between this service and the oncology team. It is anticipated that they will also support with telephone triage of the endometrial cancer pathway. They will undertake the management of patients usually dealt with at secondary care level within oncology, such as early stage low grade endometrial cancer and ovarian masses with a low risk of malignancy. The will also support with the running of the weekly Unit MDT.

In addition this post is can assist with the provision of general gynaecology in relation to the cancer services. This could include out-patient gynaecological clinics and elective gynaecological surgery. It may also include (depending on the interests of the applicant): vulval medicine, colposcopy ambulatory surgery or hysteroscopy.

The post holder would be expected to develop the oncology service, and development of areas such as tumour specific pathway improvement for endometrial, ovarian, cervical, vulval and vaginal cancers.

The job plan will be individualised to suit the skill set of the successful applicant.

Opened in 1995, this hospital amalgamated the obstetric, gynaecological and neonatal services provided for the women and babies of Liverpool. This 250 bed hospital delivers approximately 8400 babies annually and provides a range of subspecialty services and training programmes in each of the four subspecialty areas.

The Liverpool Womens Hospital Crown Street is a stand-alone unit, situated three quarters of a mile from the adult acute trust (LUFT) Royal site and Liverpool University. It has its own on-site gynaecological emergency room, dealing with approximately 350 attendances and 50 admissions weekly. The University Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and the Regional Cytogenetics and Molecular Genetics Departments are located on the same site.

Comprehensive outpatient obstetric and gynaecology services are also provided from a recently renovated building on the LUFT Aintree site, serving the north of the city and outlying areas.

The Trust has strong links with the University of Liverpool. The University Department of Womens and Childrens Health is part of the Centre for Womens Health Research based at Liverpool Womens Hospital site.

The successful candidate will become part of the team responsible for suspected gynaecological cancer diagnosis and oncology care in Liverpool. This will include the diagnosis and management of patients through triage, Rapid Access Clinics, diagnostics and could also include the surgical, in patient and out patient management of patients with gynaecological cancer in Liverpool Womens Hospital and other collaborating hospitals depending on the applicants skill mix. They would be expected to participate in the development of the service and join the team on its transformation journey.

Consultants and academic staff providing gynaecology, obstetric, fetal and maternal medicine services within the Trust have an active research profile, with particular expertise in randomised trials and systematic reviews. Laboratory facilities are available within the University Department, and there are close collaborative links with the Department of Physiology. The Trust recruits to many NIHR studies, therefore GCP training would be desirable but not mandatory. One or more research PAs may be available to interested appointees, particularly those with a proven track record in research or innovation.

Participation in a continuous training and education programme for all clinical staff is a requirement of this post. Involvement in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training would also be expected. The post holder will be expected to have the minimum requirements for level 1 educational supervision.
