Role Summary

This is a substantive appointment. This post is being offered within the Royal Devon University Hospital NHS Trust, which includes Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital and the North Devon District Hospital. Working together gives us the opportunity to offer unique and varied careers across our services combining our track record of excellence in research, teaching and links to the University with NDHT’s innovation and adaptability. The base hospital, on call requirement and residency requirement for this post is for the Eastern Service, based at RDE (Wonford). There are currently no cross-cover arrangements for anaesthetic services between the hospitals. If this were necessary in the future, the expectation is that work would be equitably distributed within the anaesthetic department and would not involve newly appointed Consultants.

The appointee will be a member of the Department of Anaesthesia. The Anaesthetic Department, Theatres and Intensive Care in combination make up the Critical Care Cluster, one of the four Clusters that form the framework for the Surgical Care Group. The department provides anaesthetic services primarily to the Wonford Hospital site in Exeter, but also to the Heavitree Hospital site and three-day case satellite theatres in Tiverton, Exmouth and Axminster. Most speciality areas are covered by the department, apart from neurosurgery, thoracic and cardiac surgery. Cover is provided for theatre lists each week with approximately , cases per annum receiving anaesthetic care. We also provide anaesthesia services to the South West Ambulatory Orthopaedic Centre.
