Job summary

A vacancy has arisen within our innovative paediatricservice for a highly motivated, full-time, permanent children's speech &language therapist as part of our dynamic and supportive speech and language therapy team.

This role requires a flexible and innovative Speech& Language Therapist to work within a dedicated Children's Speech and language therapy team and iscommitted to supporting children and families with communication difficulties.

The Children's SLT team provides assessment, treatment and advice to children and young people aged 0-19. We work in partnership with families. other health professionals and colleagues in education to maintain a holistic approach for children in the Wakefield district.

Main duties of the job

You will be required to work within clinic settings, within mainstream schools and support with initial assessment clinics, offering assessment and therapy of children with speech, language and communication needs.

You will develop, implement and evaluate programmes of care and ensure effective communication to share and promote care for children and families.

You will promote high quality client-centred care ensuring clients are treated with dignity, equality and respect

Job description

Job responsibilities

To undertakeholistic assessments in order to determine a childs speech, language andcommunication needs then plan, implement and evaluate care and determine goalsand outcomes.

To be responsiblefor assessment and intervention in a clinic setting, working from a centralisedwaiting list.

To beresponsible for, and manage, at least one school-contract based caseload as theservice requires.

To workclinically and be able to care for children presenting with a wide range ofconditions and treatment requirements, initiating and promoting excellence inclinical practice acting as a role model.

To supportinitial assessment clinics as required.

To supportthe wider team during times of sickness as directed by team lead.

To comply with the RCSLT Newly QualifiedPractitioner competencies

Prioritise existing workload in the context ofthe NQP framework and in response to demand.

To maintain a culture which recognises, and worksin partnership with, clients and their carers, involving them in all decisionsrelating to their care delivery.

To work with the Local Authority, private, thirdsector and voluntary services, ensuring effective timely communication betweenall agencies.

To be able to coordinate assessments of clientsreferred and accept/decline where appropriate giving reasons why to referringareas.

To contribute to the dissemination of informationbetween team members, using effective communication channels.

To liaise effectively with colleagues, otheragencies, clients and their carers to ensure an efficient system ofcommunication. Be able to vary how information is communicated dependent on therecipients.

Participate in clinical supervision ensuring thatpractice is maintained at high levels and is evaluated utilising appropriatemechanisms.

To bepro-active in self-development by participating in learning opportunities providedthrough staff training and supervision & where feasible, undertakework within a more specialist area of SLCN under the guidance & supervisionof more senior members of staff as part of career development (as opportunitiesallow). This may include working with children having EHCPs in mainstream orspecial schools, pre-school children with complex needs who are seen inHospital Children Centres or children attending resourced provision.

Maintain and update skills and knowledge throughlife-long learning, especially within the sphere of childrens services.

To demonstrate and maintain own knowledge andawareness of recognising and responding appropriately to safeguarding the needsof vulnerable children. Including participation in regular safeguardingsupervision at least once every 12 weeks, in line with trust policy. To attendmulti-agency safeguarding meetings as required.

To undertake all mandatory / essential trainingas required by the Trust.

Demonstratea proactive approach to team working and a commitment to team development byparticipating in & contributing to any working group as directed by theservice lead. To attend & participate in regular team meetings.

To maintain standards in ongoing healthinformation, both electronic and paper based, ensuring safe keeping andconfidentiality, accurate record keeping of relevant data and profiling. To input clinical information onto SystmOneas per Trust policy.

To maintain confidentiality, privacy and dignityin relation to the patients and their treatment at all times.

Concisely record in the clients notes allcommunications with relatives and other agencies to form a comprehensive recordand enable consistent information to be given by members of the team.

To regularly undertake & record, relevantoutcome measures (including TOMs) for the clients on caseload.

To provide opportunities for student training asrequired.

To adhere to infection prevention policies toreduce and minimise risks of heath care acquired infections and participate ininfection prevention audits.

To comply with Health & Safety policieswithin the Trust and report any accidents or untoward incidents occurringwhilst on duty in accordance with Trust policies. Providing support for the root cause analysisof any accidents or incidents.
