As we strive for continued improvement and excellence we are seeking an outstanding individual to join our team as Unit Director of Operations for Surgery and Cancer services. Your contributions will be instrumental in shaping the future of RNOH.

As the Unit Director of Operations, you will play a critical role in shaping the future of surgery and cancer services within our Trust. You will work closely with clinical leaders, operational teams and external partners to drive excellence, innovation and patient-centred care.

Your role will also encompass significant input of operational delivery of a new Electronic Health Record, leveraging technology to optimise clinical and operational performance.

In addition to your operational responsibilities, you will demonstrate exemplary leadership qualities, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, compassionate leadership and supporting the development of our diverse workforce. Main duties of the job

As Unit Director of Operations you are accountable to the Chief Operating Officer for the effective & efficient day to day operations of the Unit, delivering patient care to the highest levels of safety & quality, meeting all national & local performance criteria & targets, whilst operating within agreed financial parameters.

The portfolio for Surgery and Cancer Services is broad & a great opportunity to make an impactful & positive difference. Services include: Theatres, Admissions, Critical Care, Pre-Operative Assessment, Cancer Services & surgical teams including & not exclusive to Spines & Hip and Knee.

Service Delivery and Improvement: Collaborate with stakeholders to develop & implement the Trust strategy. Optimising & enhancing our surgical pathways, and ensuring seamless patient flows.

Performance Management: Monitor key performance indicators, identify areas for improvement, and drive operational efficiency. Collaborate with clinical teams to ensure high-quality care delivery.

Management of People: Through your compassionate leadership style manage operational staff & multidisciplinary teams within the relevant service areas ensuring that staff are equipped with the skills and tools that they and the Trust need to succeed.

Financial Management: Ensure robust financial management systems and processes are in place, to optimally utilise unit budgets and resources available and ensure the unit achieves its financial targets working in partnership with colleagues.

Job responsibilities

The post holder is required at all times to promote Trust values and contribute to achieving the Trust strategy, goals and objectives.

The post holder will:

Operationally lead and manage a group of diverse and complex teams/services which have various processes, demands and issues. Reporting to the Trust divisional director of operations, this role will be responsible and accountable for the delivery of services, within budget (Income & Expenditure) for an agreed level of activity at an expected level of service and clinical quality. Embed a structured approach to managing the unit and work with appropriate clinical, nursing, therapy and department leadership ensuring that this supports the trusts strategic vision for high quality patient centred care, excellence in education and world class research. They will ensure that effective management and delivery underpins all work taking place. Ensure the effective implementation of national and local strategies and the delivery of service objectives within available resources on all sites (both within and outside the trust) within the remit of the unit. The unit director of operations is expected to lead on designated trust wide developments which cross divisions and integrate streamlined services. This role will require the participation in the on-call rota which includes weekends and bank holidays as required.

Knowledge, Training & Experience

Essential

Substantial management experience, the majority at senior level in the health service. Experience of transformation programmes and delivery of service improvement programmes. Degree or equivalent / Management qualification

Presentation of papers to Trust level meetings executive committee or Trust board

Proven experience of analysing complex problems and successfully adapting practical and pragmatic solutions.
