Software Engineer

We’re looking for somebody with the right technical expertise and an ‘innovation mindset’ to join our innovation team in 2023.

Who we’re looking for

You’re a full-stack developer with experience in DevOps principles and practices. You’ll be used to working in a small, cross-functional team alongside product designers and product managers where levels of uncertainty around both the problem and the solution are high. You’ll be comfortable working with the team trying to find product-market fit for anything from early-stage discovery and concept development through to later-stage incubation and scale-up work for new product introduction. You’ll spend time getting to know our target users and understanding how we can meet their needs through innovation best practice.

Think of these teams as being like start-ups inside RM

You’ll be comfortable using a range of technologies and languages for both front-end and back-end development. Being part of a small team means that you’ll need to be comfortable writing code, deploying it, testing it, and generally being the go-to person for the technical implementation. We’re not too prescriptive when it comes to which technology to use but you’ll need to be able to explain technical decisions in the context of what we’re trying to achieve.

Crucially, you’ll want to understand the complete context around what we build. You’ll be as comfortable whiteboarding with the team defining hypotheses to test as you will be in a dev environment or figuring out why the latest deployment failed.

Responsibilities

Main responsibilities

Designing and developing software across a full stack from front-end web applications to back-end databases and storage Designing and developing technical architecture and infrastructure Taking part in discovery work such as user interviews, user labs, and synthesising insights Staying on top of new developments in technology including programming languages, techniques and design patterns

Key skills  

Strong technical knowledge including proficiency inFront end languages such as HTML, CSS and JavaScriptFamiliarity with JavaScript frameworks such as Angular, React and EmberServer-side language such as Python, Ruby, Java, PHP and .NETDatabase technology such as MS T-SQL, MySQL, PostgreSQL and MongoDB Excellent verbal communication and the ability to talk about technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and team members Excellent problem-solving skills with a keen attention to detail A passion for learning new things, whether technology, skills or simply learning about a new domain Bringing empathy to everything you do – asking why not what

Experience

Essential

You’ll have a strong background in software engineering and working closely with users and stakeholders You’ll have worked on software products or services where the user experience was paramount to their success You will have worked in a software role that allowed you to make autonomous decisions around design and implementation details You can demonstrate where you have used technology to solve problems and explain why you chose the technology and the approach that you did

Nice to have

You will have worked as part of a cross-functional, insight-led team You have had experience in an early-stage venture or start-up You will have followed the principles of Lean Startup and methods such as the Double Diamond design model You have some domain knowledge in education and e-assessment
