This is an exciting new role opportunity for development for one of our department staff already working in our preoperative department only.

We are a busy department with multiple clinics taking place. The Complex Pre-Op Assessment Facilitator involves working with other disciplines and specialities locally and externally. Complex patients awaiting elective surgery require extensive input in monitoring in their pathway through our pre-op assessment process to ensure our patients are getting a smooth Pre-Op journey and are tracked effectively and in a timely manner prior to their Elective surgery.

This role will deliver d patient care for patients who are to have Elective Orthopaedic/Surgical procedures. This will be undertaken by demonstrating skills that are specific to preoperative assessment that identifies the patient’s fitness for the elective procedures through assessment.

Evidence of qualifications will be requested at interview and during compliance checks. 

Main duties of the job

To identify through clinical assessment of patients requiring optimisation Pre-Elective surgery.

Through clinical decision making refer patients to appropriate specialities for opinion and/or required investigations.

Work within multi-disciplinary protocols, trust policies and guidelines.

Maintain accurate and detailed documented records of patients journey through the Pre-Operative assessment process .

Keep up to date with current NICE Pre-Op guidelines.

Ensure clinical competencies are current best practice working along side Anaesthetists and Surgeons with effective communication skills.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Be responsible to maintain a professional accountability and professionalism To maintain self-development through the practice of safe standards, trust policies and guidelines and work within compliance with the NMC Code of Conduct. Be responsible for the delivery of a high quality assessments and care, ensuring that clinical care is organised to meet the needs of the individual and ensuring patient safety. To provide and deliver specialist patient centred care to all patients attending through the Pre-Operative Assessment processes To provide and be able to make autonomous clinical decisions, referring to appropriate clinicians, and other services. Promote best working practices through participation of audits Uphold good communication skills both verbally and through concise accurate documentation. Provide clinical supervision for all staff. Demonstrate leadership skills in promoting up to date best evidence based clinical practice

Qualifications

Essential criteria

GCSE in both English & Maths

Desirable criteria

Demonstrate additional IT qualifications. Undertake further training relevant to the service needs.

Experience

Essential criteria

Experience in a Pre op clinic environment. Experience in managing own patients within clinic settings. Evidence of working with other care providers internal & External Experience in medical terminology

Desirable criteria

Experience in a pre-operative setting to assist all colleagues to help maintain clinic flow when needed Experience in dealing with patients directly or over the phone.

Skills

Essential criteria

Excellent communication & interpersonal skills Ability to multi-task under pressure Ability to remain calm in pressured situations. Prioritise patients with high priority for surgery. Assist Nurses with complex patient journey through pre-op. Obtain relevant information as requested by nursing colleague

Desirable criteria

Support all aspects of patient’s assessments when needed.

Knowledge

Essential criteria

Knowledge of Pre-Operative Assessment clinic demands Knowledge out of area multi-disciplinary processes. Knowledge of clinical high-risk patients Record updates accurately on patient records with Excel knowledge VDU & Hospital IT systems Task Item Trained/HIS

Demonstrate Pre-Operative Assessment protocols & Policies

Essential criteria

Flexible to the service needs Speak English to an appropriate standard relevant to their role, i.e. with confidence and accuracy, using correct sentence structures and vocabulary, and without hesitation.
