The role

Reporting directly to the Chief Property Officer, this role leads the Campus Development Department, comprised of three functional teams; Capital Projects, Property, Planning and Design. The Director of Campus Development is responsible for ultimately ensuring the department has the capability and continuous professional performance to progress the goal of a World Class Campus, meeting the University’s 2030 strategy.

The role is accountable for the development, management, and operation of the University’s capital development programme, with overall responsibility for the delivery of strategic major capital projects of approximately £600m within the institution’s long term capital plan and accountable for the University property portfolio of approx. £1.5BN.


What will you be doing?

Leading the Campus Development team to produce the necessary ‘delivery hierarchy’ information to drive the Campus Framework forward via plans, programmes, projects policies, & standards.

You will also lead on formulating the Campus faculty plans, thematic plans, development frameworks & masterplanning, advising on feasibility and viability including structuring partnerships between the public and private sector and ensuring that projects are delivered on time, with a zero-tolerance safety culture and are inclusive to the highest standards.

The position plays a leading role in in commercial negotiations, site review and acquisition and disposals strategy, due diligence, entitlements, legal and commercial documentation, project coordination, tracking, and reporting on project and construction management. The role also sets the strategic direction and leadership of Campus Property and Campus Planning & Design areas (supported by the ‘Heads of’ each function). Ensuring that the University’s technical and political representations at a City & Regional level are made so there is enough space allocated to support the growth of the University and its supporting economy via the Local Plans.

The Director of Campus Development is a significant leadership position and will manage senior staff, developing them and raising their performance; providing advice and guidance on new developments, significant staffing and structural issues, budgetary matters, and issues with institution-wide significance or high risk.


You should apply if

You have extensive previous experience at senior management level, leading a large function in a complex organisation with a track record of leading and managing the delivery of complex capital programmes and projects.

You will have demonstrable experience of managing responsibility for complex and multi-million-pound construction and/or development and utility services/networks projects or programmes.

Our estate is complex, encompassing residential, laboratories and grade 1 listed structures, meaning experience of working with, and developing a similarly complex property portfolio is essential. You will be professionally qualified with a relevant degree in the built environment, with a significant amount of relevant leadership experience, or substantial experience and proven success in a strategically important broad function/specialist area.

You will be a strong communicator with the ability to communicate persuasively and with gravitas, adapting the style and message to suit a diverse internal or external audience in an inclusive and accessible way. You will also boast highly developed written and oral communication skills including the ability to write strategy/policy documents and deliver presentations to a wide range of audiences.
