The BCUHB Adult Learning Disability Clinical Psychology Department is seeking to appoint a suitably qualified and experienced Band 8a Clinical Psychologist, or Band 7 Clinical Psychologist as part of a fully supported development post. This post will be based with North Gwynedd Learning Disability Team. Our Learning Disability Service is a very friendly and supportive atmosphere within which to work, and it is a service that highly values Clinical Psychology. You will be a core member of the Team and be expected to work both directly and indirectly with our clients, and provide consultation and support to your Team colleagues. Given this we are looking for expert Clinical Psychologists who are capable of delivering a service with the necessary flexibility and adaptation as is required when working with people with Learning Disability. There is also an expectation that Clinical Psychologists will provide a service to those individuals who present with complex difficulties, and this will require the delivery high quality, effective input via others (, supervising colleagues, working with systems).

Main duties of the job

The nature of Learning Disability Services means that applicants need to be organised, flexible, and capable of forming effective working/therapeutic relationships with both clients and colleagues. Given your skill base as a Clinical Psychologist your colleagues will be proactive in asking for your advice, supervision etc, and value greatly high quality input. You will also be expected to play a key role in maintaining Team health, by facilitating discussion/formulation of Team activity with regard to client work, and beyond. This may extend to providing some brief Psychological support to colleagues. The nature of Learning Disability work means that you will deliver on all of the varied roles provided by Clinical Psychologists - this is something that is highly valued by our Learning Disability Service colleagues and management structures. We have very close links with the North Wales Clinical Psychology Programme (NWCPP) - see below

Job description

Job responsibilities

This is a permanent Band 8a or Band 7 Development post - if recruited to the Band 7 Development post, the post holder will be able to progress to Band 8a once they demonstrate that they meet the competences for Band 8a level. As a Learning Disability Clinical Psychologist you will be well placed to provide a diverse range of service related activity. Our Service Users face very high levels of discrimination in all areas of their lives, and substantial inequalities when it comes to high quality mental health input and psychological therapies. These are issues that are at the forefront of activity across the Service. Given this you will provide high quality psychological input to clients directly, and indirectly via consultation and supervision to our multidisciplinary colleagues. Specific activities include, but are not limited to: adapted talking therapies, behavioural and systems based interventions (including working with staff teams), bespoke formulation driven input, specialist assessment, service eligibility activity, Dementia Assessment, risk assessment. You will also be expected to provide placements for Trainee Clinical Psychologists and be involved Trainee teaching, supervision of research projects.

This role will involve a high degree of autonomy and freedom to act and you will work very closely with the Community Learning Disability Team Manager (Learning Disability Nurse) to ensure that Clinical Psychology resource is deployed effectively. Supervision is provided from within the Clinical Psychology Department regular supervision is supplemented by additional meetings arranged at short notice where necessary.
