While working in the dispensary as part of the dispensary rota the post holder is responsible for:

The day-to-day triaging of prescriptions arriving in pharmacy for either review by a pharmacist, dispensing or stock supply. As an accredited checking technician for the final accuracy check on dispensed in/outpatient prescriptions. To dispense medicines for inpatients and outpatients including TTAs, self-medication, filling of compliance aids and the supply of patient information leaflets in accordance with SOPs.

While working on wards the post holder will undertake duties ensuring efficient delivery and development of a unit-based pharmacy service, under the supervision of the unit pharmacist. These include ensuring medicines for new admissions are supplied in a timely manner, providing ward medicines top-up services, and ensuring medicines for TTAs and discharge are available when necessary.

The postholder will assist in the training of any pre-registration trainee pharmacy technician that may be in post or any uplift of skills for staff already employed and in the training of any new staff with a dispensing or ward commitment.

To ensure delivery of these tasks the post holder will need to problem solve and be able to meet deadlines.

Wards

To identify new admissions, ensure their medicines have been ordered if not stock and compile a list for the unit pharmacist. Assess medicines brought into hospital by the patient for suitability to use during their in-patient stay. This may involve supporting the unit pharmacist to clarify the patients medicines regimen prior to admission. To independently provide a stock top-up service to all wards based at the unit. To independently order non-stock medicines from pharmacist-verified prescriptions. To support nursing staff with the safe storage of medicines and stock rotation in clinical rooms, ensuring all medicines are stored under appropriate conditions compliant with CQC requirements. Provide support for nursing staff during medicines administration rounds based on identified needs. Identity patient needs with respect to medicines information and barriers to adherence and provide advice to patients, carers, and clinical staff. To contribute to a procedure to ensure all patients who require medicines for TTAs are identified in a timely manner so that they leave hospital with the correct medicines and they or their carers understand how to take them. The post holder may be required to dispense urgent changes in medicines supplied prior to discharge using medicines available on the unit; this will involve entering patient and prescription details on to the pharmacy dispensing system. To participate in the clinical pharmacy team rota including adequate plans for handover so that a uniform service is provided during periods of sickness and annual leave.

Education & Training

To assist in the training of pre-registration trainee pharmacy technicians (PTPTs), via the apprentice routes including new posts & present staff that may wish to uplift their skills under the supervision of the training lead for PTPTs. To be an Accredited checking technician (ACT) facilitator or be willing to undergo training to be an ACT facilitator for pharmacy technicians undergoing their ACT training. To assist in training of all new staff with a dispensary or ward commitment.

Management responsibilities

To be able to prioritise workload on a daily basis and be able to re-prioritise the tasks according to need as the workload changes throughout the day, for example identifying urgently required medicines. To be able to work independently with limited supervision. To assist in the development and work to SOPs in line with Oxleas dispensing standards. To assist in the training and supervision of less experienced technicians so they can provide cover for the service during periods of sickness and annual leave. To supervise student placements. To identify areas of service development in conjunction with the unit pharmacist and clinical & dispensary team.

Clinical

Provide information on common drug dosage and use. Advise patients, carers, clinical staff on issues relating to medication regimes and changes to prescribing. Assessing patient own medicine brought into hospital. Supporting the unit pharmacist clarify medication regimen prior to admission, liaising with dispensing pharmacies as necessary.

Research

To facilitate medicines management audits such as the safe storage of medicines audit, CD audit, injectables risk assessment and literature survey. To undertake 3 monthly mini safe storage of medicines audits on all wards. To complete DATIX reports when required. To contribute to audits designed to evaluate the service.

Communication

To liaise with relevant clinical staff including pharmacy regarding the clinical aspects of medicines management. To liaise with the unit pharmacist whenever necessary to ensure the smooth running of the service. To talk to clinical staff including pharmacy, as well as patients and carers regarding medicines supply when necessary, including supply issues and counselling on giving out TTAs and discharge medicines if required by nursing staff or the unit pharmacist. To contribute ideas to improve service delivery. To maintain a commitment to continuing education and development (CPD) and attend appropriate courses and study days which are relevant and of benefit to the service.
