Job Summary.

The Government Affairs AD will support the Corporate Affairs team by driving global government affairs, but also supporting the wider work of the team in corporate communications and internal communications, which collectively combine to deliver the team’s goal within the company, to inform, unite and protect. Always aligning to Oxford Nanopore’s key priorities, resulting in increased awareness of, understanding of and collaboration with Oxford Nanopore and therefore increasing the impact that the groundbreaking technology is having around the world. 

This 12 month fixed-term contract will suit a candidate with a deep interest in life sciences and a passion for government relationships and influencing, understanding the role of reputation and collaboration in the success of delivering high-impact scientific technology. 

This role works collaboratively with many teams throughout the company – mostly the commercial leadership and corporate teams - and will provide the opportunity to learn about and support the wider organisation to deliver on its strategic priorities. As an international role, this will include coordination of work programmes across different geographies and work collaboratively with many teams in the Company. 

We are seeking someone with experience in government affairs and knowledge of life sciences, or healthcare/pharmaceuticals. The successful candidate will be key in supporting the operational organisation of the company’s government affairs work, where multiple workstreams are active and may compete for prioritisation. 

 
Key Responsibilities

Manage global government affairs programmes for the company, working to strategies designed with the SVP Corporate Affairs and the commercial teams who follow through with the government affairs and connections 

Align with the Corporate Comms team to ensure

Support Government Affairs team with briefings and admin 

Duties include but are not limited to: 

Government Affairs 

Manage the day-to-day operational government affairs work across the company, with support from SVP Corporate Affairs. 

UK as a hub for global gvt affairs 

Build network with key government officials to promote Oxford Nanopore’s mission and vision eg in the UK OLS and DBT. 

Create and coordinate, alongside UK teams, a plan for UK gvt engagement that is specific to short, medium- and long-term goals 

International programmes 

Work closely with the regional commercial and clinical leads to stay up to date on their work, priorities and opportunities. Work together to set global priorities for engagement, that are aligned with company priorities for short, medium and long term. 

Creation of plans to meet those objectives, and coordination / driving of those plans – within the resources that are available 

Be responsible for the daily management of agency support, eg from consultants, to ensure effective genomics policy work that aligns closely with organisational strategic priorities.

Ensure that external support agencies etc are supplying us with intelligence, through identifying, monitoring and influencing government legislation, regulation and public policy to support the global commercial teams. 

Continue to work with internal stakeholders and external agencies to develop and deliver an effective influencing plan for UK government specific work that reflects organisational priorities and leads to improved relationships, raised profile and Oxford Nanopore being seen as a respected voice in the UK life sciences sector. 

Help manage major company events and high-profile meetings and visits with government officials. 

Support Government Affairs delivery with project management, briefings for meetings and general admin where needed. 

Governance  

For international work, to understand and support compliance with local regulations where engaging with government officials (working with legal and regulatory teams) 

Participate in governance exercises to ensure the company is compliant with regulations eg ensuring registration with relevant lobbying registers in EU. 

Regulatory workstreams 

Supporting work led by legal and regulatory and other relevant internal teams, to understand and establish company positions on government regulations and communicate positions internally and externally.

Trade Associations and networks 

Build network with broad internal stakeholders including legal teams, to coordinate a company-wide approach to trade organisation membership and participation, inc lead Oxford Nanopore’s membership of the BIA and techUK. 

Longer term plan to develop the role to act as central hub with respect to trade association relationships, coordinating engagement as part of broader workstreams 

Corporate Communications: 

Maintain strong links with Corporate Communications teams to ensure all government affairs work is aligned. 

Understand the vision and tone of voice of Oxford Nanopore, where the customer is at the heart of our community, and we support the sharing of customer stories by customers. 

Corporate Affairs Team 

Management of government affairs budget including eg purchase orders. And aligning with and supporting management of wider team budget. 

Be responsible for maintaining a strong and close link with the Marketing team to ensure all Corporate Affairs work is aligned with marketing campaigns to maximise the impact.

Qualifications/ Education 

Undergraduate in science subject, or demonstration of sufficient understanding of the topics that Oxford Nanopore will be engaging on. 

Health policy experience 

Government/policy qualifications. 

Experience 

Proven experience in policy or government relations

Experience of working in a government relations/public affairs role within a think tank/agency, government, parliamentary, financial, industry, professional or trade body.

Understanding of scientific policy areas including scientific research and healthcare

Experience in a fast-paced environment, ideally within the life sciences sector. 

Communications/policy agency background. 

Previous experience/knowledge of working within the life science industry, knowledge genomics preferred. 

Understanding of broad regulatory environments in diagnostics and scientific research industries 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities 

Ability to build strong relationships, collaborate with teams, and work well with cross-functional colleagues. 

Excellent written and editing skills, able to adapt tone to audience and platform.

Highly organised – able to handle multiple deadlines at once. 

An eye for design and detail. 

Creative: ability to solve problems and generate ideas, with an understanding of the power of storytelling and relevance of information to specific target audiences, particularly in government communities.
