Emergency Department Technician - Band 4

A new and exciting opportunity has arisen for an Emergency Department Technician at John Radcliffe Hospital.

The Emergency Department Technician will work as part of a team, planning, delivering, and evaluating healthcare, focussing on the direct needs of service users under appropriate supervision.

The Emergency Department Technician will carry out specific clinical tasks and responsibilities as delegated by registered practitioners, ensuring the highest standard of care is achieved whilst supporting service users, family and carers and the multi-disciplinary team.

The post-holder will be working clinically in the department. The post holder will be expected to work a variety of shifts, including weekdays, weekends and nights.

Main duties of the job

The main purpose of this post is to optimise patient care within the Emergency Department.

The post holder will develop skills to assist the clinical team in the, treatment of patients and undertake specific clinical activities, applying plasters, splints and wound care, for which they will receive in house training in the first instance and will received British Orthopaedic association Plaster Certificate training in the future.

The post holder will undertake roles delegated by the Emergency Nurse Practitioners and Doctors. They will utilise skills that will enable them to care for a group of patients with minimal supervision. Care for patients will be in accordance with set treatment protocols and plaster, splint and wound care prescriptions from the medical team as directed including Emergency Nurse Practitioners.

The post holder will work under supervision as part of a team and inform the multi-disciplinary team of any problems, recording these discussions in the appropriatedocumentation. Liaising with medical staff regarding any plastering application or wound care.

The post holder will support the more Junior members of the clinical support workforce providing guidance in all areas of the department.

Job responsibilities

Deliver a high standard of clinical and therapeutic care within varied care settings Minors, resus, majors and EAU in accordance with instructions and training received.

Work within clearly defined accountability frameworks always recognising the boundaries of the remit of the Emergency Department Technician and Clinic Support role.

Communicate with patients and their carers using tact, diplomacy, empathy, and reassurance during potentially difficult or stressful situations, or where there may be barriers to understanding, , confusion, physical impairment, cognitive impairment, or language barrier.

Act as an effective resource for patients and their carer regarding plaster/ wound care queries and complications

Liaise effectively and work collaboratively with team colleagues, healthcare staff across the Trust and appropriate contacts in other organisations , CT/MRI/USS/Radiology, Transport services, Adult Social Services, GPs, Community

Services, Nursing and Residential Homes and Voluntary Agencies, to ensure effective and co-ordinated patient care.

Take responsibility for maintaining optimum care for service users through the application of evidence-based practice, and actively participate in clinical governance.

Maintain accurate, up-to-date records of care and maintain confidentiality and security of patient information according to the Data Protection Act.

Maintain and develop clinical competence through Clinical Professional Development, compulsory and service specific training, peer supervision, reflective practice, and clinical supervision.

Respect the diversity of individual service users and colleagues ensuring that the maintenance of their dignity and your respect for them is an integral part of all activities undertaken.

Actively participate in team meetings, team development and service improvement as required.

Supervise and support Nursing Assistants, Apprentice role and other unqualified staff and assist in the supervision and education of other students.

Report concerns regarding health and safety issues within the working environment to the appropriate staff and work to always minimise risk whilst delivering care.

Report untoward incidents and risks according to Trust/Employer policies and procedures and participate in incident and complaint investigations as required.

Ensure weekly and monthly stock ordering and levels are acceptable and/or in process.

To ensure appropriate liaison and follow-up at community level prior to patients discharge including family members.
