What it's like to work here
The role of the Windermere and Troutbeck Ranger is very varied, and no two days will be the same. In this role you will be part of a small, but dedicated team of Rangers who are proud to care for some very special places. The Windermere and Troutbeck property is predominantly made up of 11 farms with areas of in hand land and woodland, areas designated as SSSI, SAC and Ancient Woodland, all totalling an area of 16,000 hectares.
Our sites range from Troutbeck valley at the northern end of Windermere with its neolithic sites, ancient woodland and river valley hay meadows, to Windermere with our in-hand farm and species rich grasslands down to Fell Foot at Windermere’s southern tip.
Being within the Lake District National Park and on the edge of Lake Windermere the area is also special to visitors due to its historical and cultural significance and is enjoyed for many recreational activities. You will also have opportunities to broaden your experience by working alongside our colleagues within the wider Central and East Lakes ranger team and other properties throughout the Lakes area.
What you'll be doing
You’ll be helping to protect and care for habitats, wildlife, buildings and machinery. You’ll pass on your knowledge and enthusiasm to encourage others to love this area as much as you do. Whenever and wherever you come across people, you’ll take the time to talk to them and answer their questions, rather than rushing away to the next task.
You’ll make sure that the conservation work and outdoor experiences on the land in your care are of the highest standard. You’ll build relationships in the local community, proudly representing the Trust and letting people know about the work you and the team are doing.
