Job summary

We have a new opportunity within our multidisciplinary Nuclear Medicine team for two Band 6 Nuclear Medicine Technologist / Radiographers.

The post holders will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and perform clinical Nuclear Medicine procedures whilst providing a high level of patient care. You will be working at both Guy's hospital and St Thomas' hospital sites and will participate in all Nuclear Medicine imaging services, DEXA imaging and cardiac stressing. You will be responsible for ensuring all aspects of the patient experience are of the highest standard whilst adhering to appropriate legislation and Trust policy.

Consideration will be given to newly qualified Radiographers, or those who are about to graduate this summer, without previous experience in Nuclear Medicine for a band 6 annexe 21 Nuclear Medicine Radiographer in Training. After completion of an accelerated in-house training program of approximately twelve months (minimum of six months), the successful candidate will then be moved to a permanent, full time band 6 Nuclear Medicine Technologist/Radiographer.

HCPC registration as a Radiographer, or registration with an appropriate PSA-accredited register (for example, the RCT or AHCS) as a Clinical Technologist specialising in Nuclear Medicine is essential.

Fixed term Annex 21 positions for 12 months will be considered for suitable candidates who are in the process of applying for registration with the RCT/AHC.

Main duties of the job

The post holders will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and perform clinical Nuclear Medicine procedures whilst providing a high level of patient care. You will be responsible for ensuring all aspects of the patient experience are of the highest standard whilst adhering to appropriate legislation and Trust policy.

As an integral member of the team, you willprovide the highest quality clinical care whilst performing standard and complex Nuclear Medicine procedures and investigations. You will care forpatients of all ages, who are suffering from a wide range of illnesses including life threatening conditions and terminal illnesses, requiring empathy and skills to help patients through difficult and complex procedures. You will undertake advanced procedures including sentinel lymph node, radiosynovectomy and myocardial perfusion scintigraphy amongst many others using highly specialised equipment.

You will be required to work in a timely, organised and caring manner to deliver the high quality, patient focused service that we expect. Participation in all aspects of Continuing Professional development is expected.

About us

The Nuclear Medicine Service has revenue streams of £ and an establishment of around 55 WTE. It is one of the largest nuclear medicine services in the country. The Nuclear Medicine department at Guy's and St Thomas' strives to provide excellence in nuclear medicine diagnostic imaging, radionuclide therapies, bone mineral densitometry (DEXA), and radiopharmaceutical production. The Nuclear Medicine department has an international reputation for teaching, research and professional development. The department currently has 6 gamma cameras, including 3 hybrid imaging units, as well as 3 DEXA scanners.

The nuclear medicine team is large and comprises of dedicated staff from a wide variety of backgrounds and expertise. Our work is carried out in a mutually supportive atmosphere where we can use our combined knowledge to always put our patients first.

Job responsibilities

The main clinical responsibilities will be:

Perform routine Nuclear Medicine procedures without direct supervision, in a timely and accurate manner with due regard to the Health and Safety of self, staff and patients. To be able to operate most hardware and software used in the department. To take responsibility for patient consent, identification and relevant clinical history taking prior to commencement of imaging in accordance with Trust and professional legislation Ensure that all standard operating procedures, protocols and guidelines are adhered to. To act as an operator under IR(ME)R . To undertake both routine administration of diagnostic radiopharmaceuticals and phlebotomy and laboratory skills. Provide clear instructions and descriptions of all procedures to staff, patients and relatives as necessary. To assist in preparation of cardiac stress testing. To provide clinical information to the patient whilst interpreting, negotiating and adapting the procedure as appropriate. Optimally use all supporting and immobilisation devices on patients to achieve diagnostically accurate studies. To ensure that all images are of the highest diagnostic quality possible and that they are presented for reporting in timely and accurate manner. To undertake the preparation of and production of all radiopharmaceuticals. Assist in Quality Assurance of all relevant equipment. To participate in waste monitoring and storage.

The post holders will work as part of the Multi-disciplinary team and will be responsible to the Site Principal Technologist and accountable to the Chief Technologist.

Person Specification

Qualifications/Education

Essential

BSc (Hons) Radiography/Nuclear Medicine or equivalent. Cannulation/IV Administration qualification. Registration with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a radiographer, Registration with an appropriate PSA accredited register (eg, RCT, AHCS) as a Clinical Technologist (Nuclear Medicine)

Desirable

PgD/MSc Nuclear Medicine, or equivalent experience. BLS/ILS qualification.
