Job summary

Saxon ward is an 18 bedded male acute ward within a busy city centre adult acute mental health ward. The team on Saxon are a friendly and diverse group of individuals who all work together to provide care and compassion to the patient group they serve.

This nurse associate post is an exciting opportunity as it will be the first nursing associate post on Saxon ward and the team are keen to embrace the role to support the nursing workforce.

The role will contribute to the provision and monitoring of high quality individualised nursing care in accordance with agreed policies and procedures. The nurse associate will work independently under the leadership of the Registered Nurse to, plan, organise and deliver clinical care in line with service and patient needs. The Nursing Associate will be equipped with the appropriate level of knowledge, understanding, skills, attitudes and behaviours and will work within their scope of practice in accordance with the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) code of conduct and standards of proficiency for Nursing Associates.

Main duties of the job

A nurse associate will;

1. Implements care packages under the supervision of registered clinical practitioners in a range of settings

2. Carries out nursing care programmes, clinical observations, participates in social inclusion and/or parenting,support activities

3. May supervise/assess clinical support workers

4. May participate in case conferences and case review meetings, safeguarding

The NMC sets out the standards of proficiency for nursing associates in six sections;

Being an accountable professional -- providing safe and safe and compassionate person-centred care, acting professionally and taking responsibility.

Promoting health and preventing ill health -- supporting people to manage their health, so they can have a good quality of life at every age.

Providing and monitoring care -- monitoring a person's health needs, and working with them and their family or carers to deliver care.

Working in teams -- working well with a wide variety of colleagues in different roles, ensuring they communicate effectively.

Improving safety and quality of care -- helping to monitor and improve the quality of care someone receives, identifying any risks to their safety and taking action to manage these.

Contributing to integrated care - playing a key role in helping individuals and providing their care.

The nursing associate will be responsible for clear documentation in the patient record.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

GCSE in Maths and English at grade A -- C/4-9 or alternatively Functional Skills in Maths and English at Level 2 NVQ Level 3 (Diploma) Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care and holds the specified competencies of the Band 4 Associate Practitioner Post Note that some staff may hold the NVQ Level 4 Diploma (with the Level 4-5 Apprenticeship also relevant from 2018)

Experience

Practical experience in a health care setting Experience of working independently in an inpatient healthcare setting Excellent communication skills, written and verbal Ability to work without direct supervision Able to develop and sustain relationships across professional boundaries Ability to work as part of a team and promote team working Self-motivated, self-starter, able to organise a large and varied work programme Numerate Literate in English Being flexible and adaptable at work in order to meet competing priorities There is a frequent requirement to sitting, standing in restricted positions, there may be a requirement to use lifting equipment, moving patients There is a requirement for concentration when carrying out patient assents and delivering patient care There is an occasional requirement to deal with distressing emotional circumstances Able to deal with unpleasant working conditions body fluids Evidence of time management skills and ability to prioritise.
