Job summary

We currently have an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Psychologist to work in the Brent Integrated Psychology and Psychotherapy Service as part of our acute psychology provision.

This is an exciting time for services as we implement new initiatives within our acute services which already have a good programme for implementing trauma-informed care.

Main duties of the job

The role involves supporting the acute Clinical Psychologists and the multidisciplinary teams in their work and delivering psychologically informed interventions, with a focus on short term, intensive work. Interventions will involve both individual and group work and some work will be community based. The role will also involve supporting the implementation of trauma-informed care within services. There will be opportunities for service related research and audit, as well as the chance to undertake some teaching and training for non-psychologist colleagues.

The position will suit an individual who is self-motivated, with excellent literacy and data skills. You will need to be highly motivated and enjoy working in a fast-paced environment.

Applicants will be expected to hold a BPS approved degree in Psychology (upper second or first class) and have experience of working in a mental health setting. It would be advantageous to have experience of working within community or acute settings.

About us

The post holders will receive weekly supervision with a qualified psychologist. There are excellent opportunities for a breadth of clinical work as well as CPD.

Job responsibilities

Clinical:

To undertake protocol based psychological assessment of clients, including neuropsychological, tests, self-report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observations and semi-structured interviews with clients, family members and others involved in the clients care. To assist in the formulation and delivery of care plans involving the psychological treatment and/or management of a clients problems, under the supervision of a qualified professional psychologist, in both community and residential settings. To assist in the coordination and running of therapeutic groups. To work with other staff to assess community, day patients or residents and review their care in preparation for multi-disciplinary reviews. To assist in the development of a psychologically based framework of understanding and care to the benefit of all clients of the service, across all settings where care takes place. To attend and contribute to appropriate multi-disciplinary meetings. To provide support in the monitoring of clients on the waiting lists for assessment and treatment.

Teaching, training and supervision

In common with all clinical psychologists, to receive regular clinical supervision in accordance with professional practice guidelines. To gain wider experience of professional psychology within the NHS as agreed with the psychologist to whom they are accountable. To develop skills and competencies that assist in the delivery of current duties To contribute to the training and support of other staff in psychological care. Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

oEntitlement to graduate membership of the British Psychological Society.

Desirable

oFurther post graduate training in relevant areas of professional psychology, mental health practice and/or research design and analysis.

Experience

Essential

Work with people with mental health problems and /or other disabilities

Desirable

oExperience of paid work in direct care provision. oExperience of administering neuropsychological assessments.

Knowledge

Essential

oAn understanding of trauma-informed care approach oAn understanding of the needs and difficulties of people with mental health problems or other disabilities. An ability to apply existing psychological knowledge to a mental health context. oAn understanding of psychology applied to health care. oHigh level of communication skills (written and verbal) including an ability to communicate and work in settings in which the atmosphere may be highly emotive. oAbility to communicate sensitive information to patients, carers and colleagues in a way that addresses psychological resistance oAn understanding of trauma-informed care approach oAn understanding of the needs and difficulties of people with mental health problems or other disabilities An ability to apply existing psychological knowledge to a mental health context

Desirable

oExperience using microcomputers for databases of data-analysis, especially SPSS for Windows. oAn appreciation of issues of mental health across the lifespan.

An ability to interact effectively with staff from all disciplines. An ability to interact with people with mental health problems and/or disabilities. Ability to work independently reliably and consistently with work agreed and managed at regular intervals.
