Job overview

This post is suitable for an HCPC registered embryologist with specialist knowledge of sperm donor recruitment and donor assisted conception, plus previous experience of managing an andrology or embryology laboratory. Candidates must be familiar with all aspects of andrology laboratory practice in the context of a Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority licenced centre. They must also be able to oversee an effective quality management system, assist in the day-to-day management of the fertility service, and play an integral role in service development.

Main duties of the job

The role involves but is not limited to:

To be a key member of the management team of the Fertility Unit and to participate actively in the strategic planning and day to day efficient running of the unit.

To be responsible for the scientific direction and management of the Fertility Unit laboratory and ensure it runs efficiently, productively, and safely and successfully and within the terms of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act (1990) and the HFEA Code of Practice

To liaise with medical staff on clinical matters and use professional judgement to advise in general but also for individual patients.

To take the lead in the development and implementation of any new laboratory treatment or protocols and set the strategic direction of the laboratory as identified by national priorities, established standards of practice and the needs of Whittington Health.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Qualifications

Essential criteria

BSc Hons in biology/biochemistry HCPC registration as clinical scientist

Desirable criteria

Higher degree in reproductive science Completion of formal training programme, e.g. ACE Certificate in Clinical Embryology, STP programme

Skills & Abilities

Essential criteria

able to oversee an effective quality management system able to assist in the day-to-day management of the fertility service able to Make informed clinical decisions with respect to male fertility treatment, male fertility preservation, and donor assisted conception

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria

At least ten years’ experience as an embryologist or andrologist At least five years’ experience of adhering to HFEA regulations

Desirable criteria

Management of an embryology or andrology laboratory
