The successful candidate will join a large cohesive team of 24 Consultants, providing general and specialised obstetrics care to the population of East Hampshire and neighbouring areas.

This post will be based at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth.

About the Department

Our maternity service has been graded GOOD by the Care Quality Commission in February 2024.

The Obstetrics and Gynaecological Department is part of the Women and Childrens Clinical Service Centre and is based at Queen Alexandra Hospital. The maternity service has 88 beds and will be responsible for approximately 6000 deliveries in 2024. There are four Midwife led birth centres in the district, one of which is co-located with the Consultant Unit. We have close links with the regional Fetal Medicine Centre in Southampton.

Additionally the Gynaecology Department sees approximately 6500 new patients per year and performs over 3000 elective procedures. There is a 12 bed Gynaecological Inpatient Unit, Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit and Gynae Emergency Assessment Unit. We share day unit facilities with other specialities.

Main duties of the job

The Consultant clinical duties:

The job plan will initially be based on 10 programmed activities.

The direct clinical care will include fetal medicine scanning clinics, elective caesarean section lists, general antenatal clinic and ward cover. Each consultant also participates in the Hot Week rota on average 5 times a year when normal daytime elective activity is cancelled to allow for covering the Labour Ward.

On call requirements

The post holder will be required to participate in the obstetric on call rota including resident on call until 10pm week days and six hours resident on Saturdays and Sundays.

Job responsibilities

The successful candidate will join a large cohesive team of 24consultants, providing general and specialised obstetrics care to thepopulation of East Hampshire and neighbouring areas. The post will be based atthe Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth. The job plan will initially be basedon ten programmed activities and will include participation in the obstetricson-call rota.

The remit of the post holder will be to lead and develop a subspecialistFetal medicine scanning service alongside also provision of general obstetricservices.

The post-holder will be expected to have a regular elective Caesareansection list to facilitate safe delivery of high risk cases, as well assupervision and teaching of junior colleagues.

The Fetal Medicine service Portsmouth currently includes scanning andreviews of confirmed/suspected fetal anomalies, placental mediated disease andmonochorionic twins. We work closely with University Hospitals SouthamptonWessex Fetal Medicine service as our tertiary referral centre, but this postoffers the opportunity to lead and develop our service to include more complexstructural anomalies and other cases. The FM clinics have a designatedultrasound and consultation room equipped with a state of the art GE Voluson E8machine. Fetal Medicine clinics have a dedicated specialist midwife working 1:1with the Consultant, and they provide an opportunity for high quality teachingof undergraduates and postgraduates alike.

The Obstetrics on-call rota comprises 1:16 weeknights (Monday-Thursday,approx. 13 per year), and average 1:8 split weekends, and 4 or 5 Hot weeksper year (Obstetrics 0800-1730 Monday-Thursday, Friday OFF).

Labour ward is covered by a Consultant Obstetricianfor a minimum of 82 hours a week. This comprises Monday-Friday 0800-2200,Saturday and Sunday 0800-1200 and 2000-2200. Unpredictable clinical work maynecessitate Consultant presence outside of these times.

Qualifications

Essential

Full and specialist registration (and a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or eligible for registration within six months of interview) MRCOG or equivalent approved by PMETB Completion of RCOG ATSM in Advanced Labour Ward Practice or equivalent

Desirable

Accredited subspecialist in Fetomaternal Medicine (or equivalent)

Experience

Clinical training and experience in ante natal and intra partum obstetrics equivalent to that required for a UK CCT Ability to offer acute care as the Obstetric consultant alongside a Level 3 Neonatal Unit Demonstrable team working skills

Desirable

Experience working in tertiary fetal medicine unit
