About the role

Benefact Group, are looking for a Head of Tax to join our  Group Finance Team in our Gloucester office.

As Head of Tax you will deliver the Group Tax Strategy, with primary responsibility for all UK corporate taxes, including corporation tax, VAT and Insurance Premium Tax as well as for the preparation of the tax provisions for the Statutory Accounts. To act as a technical advisor and oversee overseas taxes borne in Canada, Australia and the Republic of Ireland.

Key responsibilities
  • Identify and implement opportunities to deliver Tax value (maximising usage of available tax reliefs, reducing tax drag)
  • Manage the relationship with HMRC and maintain a “Low” tax risk rating
  • Be a valued member of the wider Finance Management Team, providing insight and sound commercial advice as required
  • Develop and strengthen the Group’s Tax Governance framework
  • Mentor and assist the professional development of the Tax Accountant to minimise key person risk and improve succession planning
  • Act as a proactive Business Partner, providing trusted specialist tax input to business projects, including M&A
  • Develop the Benefact Group Tax function so that it is ready to support the Group’s ambition to double in size
  • Build tax modelling and reporting tools to allow reliable predictions of tax capacity and planning opportunities
  • Generate the tax disclosures for Group Financial Reporting
  • Assume full responsibility for all UK corporate tax compliance, adopting a zero-tolerance approach for material error
  • Manage the relationship with external advisors, recognising when specialist external advice is appropriate from a risk management and value-adding perspective


Knowledge, skills and experience
    • Extensive experience with corporate tax, VAT and PAYE, ideally but not necessarily in the insurance market
    • Self-starter and able to pro-actively influence senior stakeholders toward financially sound decisions
    • Skilled at stakeholder management, internal and external within a commercial environment
    • Proven ability to build strong relationships whilst maintaining objectivity, challenge and influence
    • Excellent communicator with ability to converse across various specialisms at all levels
    • Able to operate on a wide variety of fronts from monthly reporting cycles to complex long term projects
