London, United Kingdom Bloomsbury Publishing plc Full time

This is an exciting opportunity to play a pivotal role in developing one of Bloomsbury’s fastest growing digital portfolios. Working across products designed for students and academics across visual arts disciplines such as fashion, applied arts, design, art history and others, the Editor is responsible for nurturing current products and updates as well as seeing pipeline products through to fruition and developing entirely new resources in line with divisional strategic goals.

Excellent communication and organisational skills are essential, as the role requires working across multiple projects with numerous stakeholders, including major licensing partners and internal teams. Spanning content commissioning, editorial development, budget management, contract admin, market research and product commissioning, this role balances commercial and creative aspects and presents an opportunity to grow within a dynamic team committed to enriching arts education and delivering resources of excellence and originality.

The role

Lead on the development of products in line with BDR’s long-term strategic goals. Identify prospective third party partners for content licensing, either to feed Annual Updates, or to create new modular products. Take ownership of new product development by carrying out market research, assessing product viability and compiling business plan documents for presentation at departmental meetings. Manage content updates and modular product launches and keep the publishing programme on schedule by tracking content and liaising pro-actively with key stakeholders. Manage the administration related to the development of new digital products, including tracking contracts, liaising with royalty and account teams as appropriate, liaising with external licensing partners, preparing content for handover to Production, writing copy, and resolving all other issues that arise. Proactively maintain existing platforms, recommend areas of improvement and work with the Product and Marketing teams to analyse user needs and develop the products accordingly. Manage relationships with key external stakeholders including authors, editors, advisors, and licensing partners. Commission and oversee submission of digital-first content, carrying out peer review where necessary and spearheading the creation of new pedagogical series. Manage the editorial budgets for allocated projects, processing and recording invoices. Act as ambassador for Bloomsbury with external stakeholders and attend conferences where required.

Knowledge, skills and experience

A pro-active self-starter with a keen eye for the bigger picture and a creative drive to develop engaging products as BDR grows in suite of digital platforms. Commercially astute with a familiarity with the emerging trends and challenges of the digital academic publishing market. Strong editorial experience with a proven track record of commissioning content and achieving objectives. A professional and enthusiastic attitude with experience working with authors and external third party partners to deliver content. Experience drafting authors/content licensing partner contracts and reviewing project budgets. Excellent written and verbal communication and relationship building skills with high editorial standards. Excellent organisation, prioritisation and time management skills with ability to work calmly under pressure and effectively as part of a team. Good MS Office skills, especially Excel and Word. Experience with Ringgold, Biblio, MDL Connect and the creation of Wiki pages a plus. Experience within digital publishing and/or a background in a visual arts discipline a plus.
