We are excited to advertise for a new Emotional Wellbeing and Mental Health Lead role in our School Health Service. The postholder will work as part of the School Health Service to deliver an expanded mental health offer. You will be innovative and have a passion for improving children and young people's emotional wellbeing and mental health. You will enjoy working in school settings and beyond into the community, and will be skilled at partnership working and building relationships. You will be able to work with a range of clinical and non clinical staff both in the service, in schools and across into other settings. This is an exciting opportunity to help shape the direction and delivery of this work, at a time when children and young people's emotional wellbeing and mental health has never been more important.

Main duties of the job

Work as part of the School Health Service. Champion emotional health, wellbeing and resilience through coordination and delivery of universal activities / targeted activities with CYP with / without mental health and emotional difficulties. Liaise with Local Authority / CAMHS services as appropriate and make informed onward referrals /support others in the team to do so.

Work with staff in the School Health Service, school staff, directly with CYP to develop opportunities / skills to build resilience, relationships and self-help strategies, and to promote the importance of physical activity in relation to emotional health and wellbeing. Run group sessions on particular topics and via drop-ins where YP will be provided with an opportunity to share / reflect on concerns.

Accountable for emotional health promotion activities; developing resilience / reducing risks, some direct work with some pupils, supported by the MDT. Work jointly with other members of the Team offering generic /more specialist advice, consultation and training.

Work alongside staff, developing networks within the Borough relating to GP practices, education providers, Local Authority children’s services, Youth Offending Services, substance misuse agencies, Family Hubs and voluntary sector organisations, in order to better meet the emotional health needs of CYP and families in line with the iThrive model.

The service is comprised of school nurses, staff nurses, technicians, administrators and specialist roles. The service has a wide remit and is highly valued across both boroughs for our work. 

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Maintain an overview of all the emotional and mental health and wellbeing activities delivered by the School Health Service into schools, and have oversight of wider partnership provision in schools (delivered by other partners/VCS) to avoid duplication and strengthen collaboration. To develop and maintain an emotional and mental health and wellbeing pack that team members can use in partnership with other key resources in schools, such as Healthy Schools Partnership. To identify training needs for the wider team, and train all of the team to identify issues relating to emotional and mental health and wellbeing in order to support children and young people to be well, healthy and happy. To deliver regular, high quality mental health supervision to the team, to staff at all levels. To develop the capability of the schools and wider workforce to provide initial assessment, and early detection of mental health problems and appropriate early referral. Design, implement and quality assure mental health sessions to be delivered into schools. Coordinate the delivery of these sessions into schools and support the wider team, including the RSHE Team, with this delivery. Deliver sessions directly in schools working in coordination with other providers including CNWL CAMHS. Support team members to develop the skills to enable schools to take a whole-school approach to emotional and mental health and wellbeing, including identifying and sourcing appropriate training for the school population. This will include promoting the importance of physical activity in relation to emotional health and wellbeing, highlighting the benefits of physical activity and use of green spaces in relation to emotional and mental health and wellbeing at every opportunity to promote resilience, happiness and wellbeing. Enable the service to work closely with priority groups and settings around emotional and mental health and wellbeing. This will include, but not be limited to, children and young people in alternative provision, special schools and those living in temporary accommodation and bridging hotels taking and promoting a holistic view for each child or young person and their individual circumstances and lives. Attend and participate at key strategic groups such as Kensington and Chelsea and Westminster Suicide Prevention Steering Group meetings and related activities and the Kensington and Chelsea and Westminster Emotional Wellbeing and Mental Health Partnership. Work with Healthy Schools and stakeholders to promote positive mental health and training. Work closely with the Safeguarding Advisor and Violence Against Women and Girls Lead as well as the wider team to support schools when there is an incident that requires follow up and support. Work with staff in the service and key partners to deliver early direct work with young people in schools (and at times as appropriate with their families) to support and improve their emotional health and resilience. Offer guided signposting and age appropriate educational and informational group sessions around drops-ins and after school sessions such as:- Maintaining emotional wellbeing and “looking after yourself”Maintaining friendshipsAddressing bullyingSupporting children going through divorce, separation or bereavementKnowing about the effects of substance misuse and how to say NOLiving with teenagers/Living with parents To keep up-to-date and accurate client records, in line with Trust policy. Ensure client confidentiality of all written and electronically stored personal data in accordance with the Data Protection Act. To maintain client’s right to privacy by ensuring that confidential information is only accessible to relevant staff. To write and constructively manage written reports requiring sensitive, complex and sometimes unwelcome information to clients, families and other professionals. Provide drop in 1:1 sessions with pupils, both individually and jointly with School Nurses, and liaise with other pastoral care support staff. To prioritise work with young people considered being particularly vulnerable. Make referrals when appropriate and or provide ongoing support and therapeutic work alongside children, young people and parents in the community. To work effectively alongside partners in CAMHS and the Mental Health in Schools Teams where concerns regarding the mental health of children and young people are detected and ensure through training, that these are identified early. To analyse data in relation to accident and emergency and inpatient notifications relating to mental health admissions and to work in collaboration with school nurses to ensure that a package of care and a safety plan is in place following an acute admission to accident and emergency or mental health wards.  To develop strong professional relationships with CNWL CAMHS and other relevant services supporting emotional and mental health and wellbeing. To support the team to work alongside CAMHS to implement the service mental health and emotional wellbeing early identification and early intervention protocol. Undertake clinical networking with appropriate agencies e.g. Children’s Social Care, Police, Sexual Health To participate in service development, policy updates and to provide information, data and written reports for other proposals as required within the School Health Service. To attend and contribute to team meetings and service events. To be an active member of the BiBorough School Health Service leadership team, including engaging in leadership team meetings and providing peer support to colleagues across the leadership team. To participate in the assessment and supervision of the pre and post registration nursing students, social work students/other students on placement with the service, when required and as appropriate. To ensure that work is carried out using evidence-based practice and that the postholder continues to develop skills and knowledge through regular CPD, reading and engagement in clinical supervision. To be involved with systems of clinical audit and collect and provide statistics related to the work of the team as required by the clinical service lead. To participate in regular reviews of the team’s activities using evidence to drive changes. To participate in research projects where appropriate, adhering to clinical and research governance guidelines, including keeping up-to-date and accurate clinical records.
