The Urology Service at St Mary's Hospital, Isle of Wight NHS Trust, has an exciting opportunity to appoint two Urology Consultants. These posts will provide a comprehensive general urology outpatient, inpatient, diagnostic and day case surgery service for urology patients. Those who are skilled in the surgical management of BPH would be particularly welcomed.

Main duties of the job
Although the successful candidates will be employed by the Isle of Wight NHS Trust and will spend the majority of their time working at St Mary's Hospital, in Newport, in discussion with QAH there are potential opportunities to undertake sub-specialty work at the Queen Alexandra Hospital, in Portsmouth, serving the local community and a total population of approximately 800,000 people. These appointments will focus on developing the urology service on the Isle of Wight and support our joint strategy across the Partnership.
The post holders will be expected to demonstrate excellent leadership skills with regard to individual performance, clinical teams, the Trust and when participating in national initiatives.
It is hoped that at least one of the two posts will be attractive to a clinical leader, willing to further the development of the acute partnership arrangements between the Isle of Wight and Portsmouth, bringing robust professional experience and skills.

Key responsibilities & main duties
Clinical
Performance, continuous improvement & sustainability
Assist in establishing and maintaining a high-quality environment for patients and staff, which delivers excellent care to patients and supports the achievement of all local and national access targets. Work with other clinical managers, senior, Executive and other colleagues across the joint service to agree consistent approaches and put in place agreed systems and processes to establish and monitor required standards of care, as defined by the Trust, Department of Health and Social Care, National Institute of Clinical Excellence, GIRFT and other relevant bodies (e.g. Royal Colleges). Promote and achieve cost improvements to enhance efficiency and effectiveness. Where necessary lead challenging but respectful conversations with departments and services where areas of improvement are required. Work with medical, nursing, and managerial colleagues to ensure high performance in the following areas: Clinical efficiency e.g., LOS reductions, reducing the number of follow ups, reducing cancelled operations and DNA rates. Quality of outcomes e.g., infection control targets, reducing re-admission rates. Financial management e.g., identification, implementation and achievement of cost improvement programmes and participating in efforts to ensure services are provided cost effectively e.g, monitoring and managing the drug budget to target, ensuring accuracy of clinical data for the team. Operational efficiency e.g., day-case rates, waiting list activity and demand management and emergency department response. Participate in the business planning and objective setting process for the Directorate and Trust where appropriate and team objective setting as part of the annual job planning cycleManagement
You will be required to co-operate with local clinical and operational managers as well as contributing to the efficient running of services. You will be expected to share with consultant colleagues in the medical contribution to management within your supporting professional activities. Attendance and contribution to departmental and directorate meetings is encouraged. Ensure that adequate systems and procedures are in place to control and monitor leave for non-Consultant medical staff where required and ensure that there is appropriate cover within the clinical areas, including out of hours arrangements. Adhere to Trust / departmental guidelines on leave (ensuring prospective cover) including reporting absence. Participate in the recruitment of non-Consultant medical staff as delegated by the Clinical Director. Represent the Trust at appropriate clinical networks / other external clinical meetings, as delegated by the Clinical Director. Actively demonstrate behaviours in alignment with Trust vision and values and promote these as a role model and encourage others to do the same. Demonstrate compliance with Trust policies and procedures, duty of care to patients, Trust and professional codes of conduct (Good Medical Practice). Postholders should ensure that remain medically qualified and they maintain specialist registration with the General Medical Council, maintaining the competencies required to carry out the duties required of the post.
