Job summary

We have an excellent opportunity for the successful candidate to join our dynamic team of Surgical Care Practitioners, either as a Band 6 Trainee Surgical Care Practitioner or a Band 7 Surgical Care Practitioner, dependant on qualifications and experience. Successful completion of an accredited MSc in Surgical Care Practice is required for the Band 7 post.

Currently a team of 6, we work autonomously alongside consultant colleagues; acting as independent practitioners, supporting the orthopaedic surgeons whilst in the operating theatre, but also carrying out invasive procedures, such as preparation of ACL grafts and allograft; reduction of dislocated joints and fractured bones; application of splints and wound closure whilst continuing to lead on development and delivery of high standards of nursing and medical care to our trauma and elective patients. This is an exciting and progressive role which is continuously adapting to meet and enhance the care provided to our patients.

The Surgical Care Practitioners also work alongside the Orthopaedic Nurse Practitioners who take on enhanced roles in the ward environment with the whole team line managed by an 8a Lead Practitioner. The team work together contributing significantly to the whole surgical team within the orthopaedic department. Activities away from direct patient care will include audits such as those related to Surgical Site Infection monitoring, the National Joint Registry, and the National Hip Fracture Database.

Main duties of the job

To work at an advanced level as a Surgical Care Practitioner (SCP) under the supervision of Consultant Surgeons. To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of professional activity. To provide highly specialist expertise and knowledge in the management of patients within Trauma and Orthopaedic services in collaboration with other health care colleagues. To support and advise junior/trainee medical staff, trainee SCP's and other members of the multidisciplinary team (MDT) as required. The post holder will work within the boundaries dictated by their professional body. To be pivotal in review and development of the service and to reflect the needs of the patient group. To support the delivery of a high quality, safe and compassionate healthcare service, all staff are expected to act as a role model to others in all aspects of their work and consistently demonstrate NNUH's 'PRIDE' values of People focused, Respect, Dedication, Integrity and Excellence.

Work Patterns will be discussed at interview and will include occasional weekends and bank holidays
