Position: 1-1 Teaching Assistant

Location: Wakefield Area (Key Stage 1 or Key Stage 2)

Reports to: Classroom Teacher, SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator)

Role Summary

The 1-1 Teaching Assistant provides individual support to a primary school pupil with specific learning needs. The role involves working closely with the child to support their academic, social, and emotional development, ensuring they can engage fully with the curriculum and school activities. This role requires empathy, patience, and adaptability, alongside strong communication skills to work effectively with the child, teachers, parents, and other support staff.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Individual Support

    • Provide tailored support to the assigned pupil during lessons and school activities.
    • Implement strategies and interventions as outlined in the child’s Individual Education Plan (IEP) or Education, Health, and Care Plan (EHCP).
    • Adapt classroom materials and resources to meet the pupil's specific learning needs.
    • Support the pupil with any physical needs, including mobility and personal care, if required.
  2. Learning Assistance

    • Reinforce lesson objectives and learning activities to aid comprehension and engagement.
    • Break down tasks into manageable steps and provide prompts to encourage independent work.
    • Help develop the pupil’s language, literacy, numeracy, and social skills through one-to-one or small group work as necessary.
  3. Behavioral and Emotional Support

    • Use positive behavior management techniques to support the pupil’s emotional and social well-being.
    • Implement any behavior plans or strategies to promote positive interactions and self-regulation.
    • Offer a safe and supportive environment where the pupil feels valued and understood.
  4. Collaboration and Communication

    • Liaise with the classroom teacher, SENCO, and other relevant staff to provide consistent support.
    • Provide feedback on the pupil’s progress, noting achievements and any areas for improvement.
    • Communicate regularly with parents or guardians, updating them on progress and challenges.
  5. Documentation and Monitoring

    • Keep accurate records of the pupil’s progress, attendance, and any incidents.
    • Track the effectiveness of support strategies and adjust as needed in coordination with the SENCO and teaching staff.
  6. Professional Development

    • Participate in relevant training to support the needs of the assigned pupil and to develop skills.
    • Attend staff meetings and training sessions related to SEN support.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum Level 2/3 Teaching Assistant qualification or equivalent.
  • Experience working with children in a school setting (primary level preferred).
  • Knowledge of supporting children with special educational needs (SEN) is desirable.
  • Training in behavior management or experience in delivering specific learning programs is advantageous.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
