Do you have experience working with pupils who have Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs? Teaching Personnel is currently recruiting for a 1:1 SEMH Teaching Assistant to support a primary school student on a full-time, temporary basis. Although this role is temporary, registration with Teaching Personnel will mean you have access to further opportunities in the future, if desired.

About the Role:

As a SEMH 1:1 Teaching Assistant, you will be working closely with a student to support their emotional, social, and academic development. You’ll be helping them to build confidence, engage with learning, and manage their emotions within the classroom setting. This is a vital role that requires patience, empathy, and the ability to use positive reinforcement strategies to encourage positive behavior.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide 1:1 support to a primary school student with SEMH needs
  • Assist with managing challenging behavior and emotional outbursts
  • Support the student in accessing the curriculum and engaging in classroom activities
  • Work closely with the class teacher and SENCO to create a positive, structured learning environment
  • Promote social skills, emotional regulation, and overall well-being
  • Assist with tasks such as preparing resources, taking notes, and supervising during breaks or lunchtime

What We’re Looking For:

  • Experience working with children with SEMH or other SEND needs (preferred)
  • A patient, calm, and empathetic approach to supporting students
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, and parents
  • A proactive attitude and the ability to work independently
  • Previous experience as a teaching assistant or in a similar role is desirable, but not essential
  • A relevant qualification in childcare, education, or SEN support (e.g. Level 2/3 Teaching Assistant qualification, or equivalent) is preferred but not mandatory
