About the role

As Legal Counsel – Commercial & Disputes you'll be a key member of UCL’s Legal Services Department. You'll be responsible for providing advice on a wide range of legal matters relating to UCL, focused on disputes but also advising on regulatory and commercial matters. The job offers a huge amount of variety, and life at UCL is never dull

Disputes will range from pre-action to litigation in areas including commercial disputes, student disputes, intellectual property disputes, property and construction disputes, information governance, health & safety, and other regulatory issues. Commercial matters will involve drafting and negotiating complex agreements, intellectual property issues, charity matters, governance issues, research ethics and the legal aspect of funding agreements.

You'll have line management responsibility for a project specific, fixed term paralegal and will work on business as usual matters as well as lead on specific projects within the Legal Services Department.

About you

To do this job you'll have significant post–qualification experience at a leading law firm or equivalent in-house role. You'll have experience dealing with a range of legal issues on a self-standing basis and a willingness to take on new tasks in unfamiliar areas and to react confidently and quickly to emerging issues.

Experience of providing advice on a range of commercial matters and conducting litigation is essential, as is up to date technical knowledge, excellent analytical skills and sound judgement, and demonstrable experience operating and influencing at senior management and board level.

If you have experience and working knowledge of UCL-relevant areas like including student disputes, consumer protection, civil procedure, judicial review, Equalities Act , health & safety, data protection, risk and compliance, then that's great.
