Job summary

The post holder will be an NMC registered professional, with a background within the surgical speciality.

The post holder will be responsible for ensuring the provision of high quality multi-professional learning environments within ELHT but will be required to work locally within the Surgery directorate where multi-professional learning opportunities can be provided. The post holder will be working predominately with our medical students but the post holder will be required to support the breadth of the student experience, irrespective of grade or profession.

Main duties of the job

Visit students within their placement supporting them with their education and assessments as well as ensuring no learning opportunity is missed. Identify and develop new placement opportunities for medical students within the Trust by networking with clinical areas to explore all possible learning opportunities within your relevant division. Develop bespoke teaching sessions that meet student learning needs & enhance placement learning experience. Deliver clinical skills sessions, teaching and assessments of medical students. Support the DUE team in the allocation of timetables and clinical activity. Participate in the design, implementation and evaluation of current or new programmes of education and training. Engage with the wider clinical workforce, working collaboratively across disciplines and professions through work-based learning, clinical support, education and training and clinical supervision. Assess the quality of placement learning environments; ensuring all service areas/ placement providers have up to ILOs and understand the requirements of the learners whilst on placement. Facilitate the development and ensuring a sufficient provision of clinical supervisors across relevant service areas; providing supervision and support structures, building education in clinical practice capability, consistency and efficiency. Quality

Support placement education leads, Practice Educators & the PEF team to identify and develop placement that meet student learning needs, mirror the patient journey or explore locality based healthcare communities. Promote the use of a hub and spoke model of placements (particularly in a community/primary care setting) that will increase the breadth of placement experience, improve multi-professional learning and encourage the development of new spoke placement opportunities. Constantly seek to improve the quality of education through the use of evidence-based practice, liaising with professional colleagues, reviewing literature and evaluating feedback. Develop evaluation methods to assess the impact of education on patient care. Support the production of a central placement database that will improve communication to and from placement managers and educators. Assess the quality of learning environments against quality assurance standards, suggesting improvement measures to enhance learner experience. Work with the various clinical placement areas ensuring they have relevant and up to date action plans in place which can feed into the annual quality monitoring visits for HEIs. Develop, implement and review education in the clinical learning environments in line with educational policy. Identify shortfalls in supervision and facilitate access to multi-professional mentorship and supervision programmes / updates and training opportunities. Provide best practice advice in a clinical setting for supervisors and staff in relation to clinical education.

Student Support

Support multi-professional learning activity across the trust and local service providers Delivery of programmes of learning ensure that academic rigor is maintained and that learning outcomes can be met. Assess candidates on their ability to perform clinical skills in both simulated and clinical environments in line with Trust and National guidelines. Work alongside clinical educators and supervisors to support, supervise and assess the medical students and other learners. Support supervisors in complex decisions relating to the learner experience including the achievement of learning outcomes, competence and fitness for practice.

Allocations

Support the DUE & placement hub teams to map annual allocation timetables for medical students and for each HEI to enable long term planning. Work with partner HEIs to reduce placement overlap and duplication. Maximise placement use across the Trust and reduce last minute placement cancellations or emergency placement requests.

Capacity

Support the development of E-roster to track and manage learner placements on a daily basis. Support the introduction of capacity as a daily number of learners rather than a weekly number of students. Support the development of sufficient clinical educators & supervisors across relevant service areas to meet increasing learner numbers & placement capacity.

Health Education England (HEE) The North West Higher Education Institutions Locality based Service Providers - local Trusts, CCGs, and the Private, Voluntary and Independent Sector Professional regulators

Communication:

Ensure communication channels are used appropriately to facilitate the flow of information between internal and external partners. Share best practice relating to Quality Assurance and Interprofessional Learning across placement providers. Produce regular progress reports to inform Education Quality monitoring. Ensure that confidentiality is maintained at all times in conjunction with organisational IG policies. Have an understanding of emotional intelligence and human factors and its impact within the health care setting: patients, clinicians, service providers and the wider team.

Qualifications

Essential

Educated to Degree level with professional registration. Subject-specific expertise/evidence and clinical skills knowledge. Teaching/assessment qualification (Cert Ed, ENB998, City & Guilds 7302, PGCE, Practice Assessor or equivalent)

Desirable

Coaching Qualification ALS provider or equivalent. Resus Council GIC oAIM/Alert Train the Trainer - or willingness to undertake.

Experience

Essential

Post-qualifying experience in a surgical setting, usually around 3 years. Evidence of competency in a wide range of clinical skills. Evidence of formal facilitation skills, training & teaching experience. Evidence of supporting learners in the clinical setting. Able to work independently and as part of a team. Current UK Driving License/Access to a vehicle for work purposes
