Job summary

The post holder(s) will assume the role of Specialist Teaching Fellow for Paediatrics. This will involve planning, organisation and co-ordination, delivery and evaluation of teaching undergraduate medical students from University of Sunderland (UoS) years 3 & 4 and Newcastle University (NU) years 3 & 5 using multiple modalities (bedside, classroom, SIM virtual) working closely with other members of the teaching team. Working with Consultant Block Leads (UoS) and Year leads (NU) the primary role will be to deliver and facilitate teaching which covers all student paediatric learning outcomes and to ensure there is cohesive delivery of paediatric curricula across both medical schools. The post holder will be a point of contact for students who require pastoral input and also be an allocated supervisor of students and their portfolios.

The post holder will be responsible for ensuring that both medical school exam conditions are met in relation to paediatric stations and will also be expected to undertake and perform examinations as per the universities standards. This will include quality assurance and governance of teaching within all paediatric rotations.

Main duties of the job

The role will be structured around preparation, timetabling, delivery and evaluation of relevant paediatric curriculum, subject to discussions within the teaching team and agreement by the Consultant Block Leads and Year leads. The post holder will contribute to assessments including formative assessments during term time and summative OSCE and MOSLER exams. Support of exam standard setting and team marking of summative assessments are also expectations of the post holder. The post holder will also be responsible for overseeing the clinical placements of medical students to maximise learning experience. The post holder would be a point of contact for students and undergraduate faculty for trouble shooting in regards to student placement allocation. Inter-professional learning opportunities should be made a priority.

Job responsibilities

Working with year and block leads, teaching fellows to develop, deliver and evaluate paediatric based curriculum for University of Sunderland and Newcastle University medical students. The role will involve organisational planning (both classroom and clinical based) as well as teaching for these year groups. There will also be opportunities to shape teaching style and develop novel or innovative teaching strategies. Overseeing student clinical placement is vital to ensure experiential learning is maximised.

The post holder will be part of the Undergraduate Educational Team and will be part of the team meetings for University of Sunderland and Newcastle University both internally and externally. The specialist teaching fellow will work with senior team in ensuring we build an undergraduate departmental memory. This will be achieved by being instrumental in developing standard operating procedures, adding to, and reviewing the undergraduate ultimate resource folder. Service development is vital in this role such as further developing simulation facilities for medical students. It would be expected for the post holder to attend both departmental and regional meetings across the universities to keep abreast of current issues and feed back to clinical teams. There is potential to apply masters in medical education and for honorary clinical/senior lecturer status at the Universities at the discretion of the DUCS and/or DUME.

The post holder will contribute to the joint Annual Quality visits involving the Foundation Programme and Undergraduate Programme at University of Sunderland. The post holder will attend Senior Team Meetings and LEP liaison group where appropriate.

The post holder will be liaise with the UoS to contribute to the following:

Exams OSCE and MOSLER Undergraduate Faculty courses as required. Educational activities such as MMI, Summer School, Year 1 & 2 hospital visits and clinical skills courses OSCE working groups Supervision and promotion of SSC

Mentor and supervise students and monitoring

Qualifications and training

Essential

Hold professional qualification MBBS, MRCP (UK), FRCEM, FRCA, FRCS, MRCPCH/DCH, MRCOG or equivalent in other specialty areas Significant experience of working in a paediatric clinical setting Membership of Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health Have experience in teaching aspects of clinical methods. Able to demonstrate planning and organisational skills Neonatal Life support qualification Paediatric advanced life support qualification UK driving licence

Desirable

Evidence of training in Teaching/Educational Planning/Assessment/Feedback. Trained in Simulation teaching and debriefing. Postgraduate qualification in Medical Education
