Job overview

This 6 month post is a fellowship for anaesthetists with at least three years of anaesthetic training.
An additional tier of clinical fellows is recruited to manage the increase in acuity and out of hours work at the Royal London Hospital (RLH). The out of hours is focused on supporting the increasing numbers and complexity of cases on labour ward at RLH. The on calls will reflect this service need and be split between a second on call for labour ward and providing cover for trauma orthopaedic theatres. All daytime work, including at weekends, will be in the main operating theatres.
The post also offers the opportunity for a clinical fellow to obtain competencies in one of a number of surgical specialties undertaken at RLH (eg neuro, complex obstetrics, perioperative medicine and high risk preassessment, regional anaesthesia, trauma anaesthesia major abdominal surgery) and to develop their CV by undertaking QI projects or research. In addition, each successful candidate will have a dedicated educational supervisor to support their career goals.
Out of hours they will work with a team of an anaesthetic core trainee, an obstetric anaesthetic registrar, a paediatric anaesthetic registrar and a senior anaesthetic registrar.

The Department of Anaesthesia provides a service for all surgical specialities within Bart’s Health and is involved in many exciting initiatives. This is an excellent opportunity for dynamic individuals with the appropriate skills to join a first class multi-disciplinary team providing the full range of services to the majority of East London and beyond in a progressive London teaching hospital environment.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

GMC Registration MBBS or equivalent 3 years of anaesthetic training Completion of an approved core anaesthetics training programme Primary FRCA / Equivalent

Desirable criteria

Minimum 5 years working in the NHS

Knowledge

Essential criteria

Experience in the peri-operative care of patients including pain management Audit experience

Desirable criteria

Experience in management of high-risk surgical cases

Teaching & Training

Essential criteria

Involvement in teaching undergraduates, junior medical staff, nurses and allied health professionals

Desirable criteria

ATLS, ALS, APLS or PALS Involvement in undergraduate education.

Research

Essential criteria

Understands research methodology Actively encourages research with junior and other staff Active participation in research

Desirable criteria

Published or submitted research to indexed journals Experience of research presentations to learned societies on topics related to anaesthesia
