Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for an innovative Registered Nurse to join the nursing leadership team as practice development nurse. We have two vacancies for a Practice Development Nurse, one will cover our three prisons located on the Isle of Sheppey (HMP Elmley, HMP Swaleside and HMP Standford Hill) and the other will cover our three prisons in West Kent (HMP Maidstone, HMP Rochester, HMP East Sutton Park).

We are seeking highly skilled, knowledgeable and dynamic nurses who have extensive clinical experience across primary care services. As a practice development nurse you will be passionate about delivering high quality care in combination with teaching colleagues and other learners within Kent prisons.

Effective management, communication and leadership skills are essential for this role and the post holder must be adaptable to service needs and be able to demonstrate initiative and possess a proactive approach to improving standards of practice, education and skills across services.

This role will have a focus on our primary care services which include nurses and support workers caring for people who have physical health related conditions. There will also be opportunities to deliver training and support staff within our primary care teams as we work towards building skills and closer/integrated working between physical and mental health services within Greenwich prisons.

Main duties of the job

As an expert practitioner, and source of expert advice to offenders, carers, and colleagues, the post holder is expected to take an active role in clinical nursing education across the prison services. They would also ensure that services are offender-focussed and reflect the NHS modernisation agenda.

The post holder will work with others and support research and evaluation in line with Trust Strategy to improve the quality and clinical effectiveness of nursing strategies. They will contribute to the clinical governance agenda by promoting evidence based and supportive care to mentally disordered offenders and those presenting with substance misuse related concerns.

The post holder will exercise a high degree of personal and professional autonomy, have an ability to reach complex and critical judgements and have decision making skills to satisfy the expectations and demands of the job.

Address History:

5 years address history will be needed.

Applicants that are not UK Passport holders who provide less than 5 years UK address history will need to provide a Police Certificate which must be in English from where they resided previously.

Applicants who are UK Passport holders who have lived abroad for a period of more than six months during the last three years will need to provide a certificate of good conduct or an overseas police check in English from the countries resided in or visited .

To manage a clinical caseload, relevant to clinical expertise. To act as an expert practitioner demonstrating advanced knowledge and skill beyond that associated with traditional nursing roles, including the integration of research evidence into practice by expert clinical reasoning and decision-making. To utilise advanced clinical reasoning skills and evidence based knowledge in the management of offenders with highly complex presentations and to be clinically competent to utilise expert skills and knowledge. To develop, establish and implement guidelines and nurse led initiatives, particularly where precedents do not exist. To create, develop and design with other multi-professional staff care pathways for the treatment of the particular offender groups with the aim of disseminating good practice and improving outcomes. To interpret and analyse complex clinical and non-clinical facts, to regularly provide expert advice and second opinion to health care professionals, including when views may differ or conflict. To provide expert nursing advice on the treatment and support of offenders. To provide a consultancy service to clinical teams across the prison services. To be involved in the development of a research culture within the prison services, which will enable practice to be informed. To access relevant clinical supervision for your work, and provide supervision for less experienced practitioners of all professions. To promote evidence based nursing practice. To exercise a key role within the prison clinical governance forums. To contribute as required to the assessment of an individual and individual plans in response to the offenders physical, social, spiritual, cultural and psychological needs, monitoring the same to ensure the achievement and maintenance of the highest quality care. To ensure a high priority is afforded to health promotion initiatives for offenders To participate and promote multi-disciplinary working.
