Job Summary

Weare seeking an experienced nurse to join our team on Grand Union Ward, whoprovide specialist Haematology, Oncology and Stem Cell Transplant services forchildren and young people. We are looking for a nurse with minimum 1 year acuteward experience, with IV and oral medication competencies as desirable skills,to support our established team for 2-6 months.

GrandUnion ward is a 13 bed paediatric unit, which is internationally recognised asa centre of excellence, caring for children and young people who requirespecialist haematology, oncology and stem cell transplant services.

Youwill have the opportunity to care for children and young people of all ageswith a wide range of haematology conditions such as Sickle Cell Disease, BetaThalassemia, Diamond Blackfan Anaemia and Bone Marrow Failure syndromes. Grandunion ward is also a paediatric oncology shared care centre which offers youexposure to a wide range of oncological conditions.

Youwill be part of a highly skilled nursing team who work collaboratively with ourBone Marrow Transplant Coordinators and Clinical nurse specialists as well asengagement with a wide range of clinical specialities including psychologists,physiotherapists and dieticians.

Main duties of the job

ClinicalDuties

Totake charge of the clinical needs of a group of defined patients, on occasionprioritising workload according to changing clinical need.

Completingregular observations on patients and escalating when there are concerns.

Basicnursing cares such as helping to wash patients and changing nappies.

Closemonitoring of patient input and output, using the online medical records systemto document overall fluid balance and escalating when there are concerns.

Toactively promote the safeguarding of children and young people.

Administeringmedications, some of which are bone marrow transplant specific, via multipleroutes such as intravenous, oral, using NGT/Pegs and nebulisers.

Accuratedocumentation using the online medical records system, which is timely andup-to-date.

About us

In 2018, Chelsea & Westminster NHS Foundation Trust, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and Imperial College London stated their intent to collaborate on the development of an integrated care system for paediatric services spanning West London.

West London Childrens Healthcare will unite paediatric services from across West London together into hubs that link closely together to support clinical care provision, research, education and training. The hubs will be networked with referral hospitals and primary care networks to optimise local care wherever possible for children whatever complex healthcare needs they have and to facilitate a population health approach

In November2018, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust (ICHT), Chelsea & WestminsterNHS Foundation Trust (C&W) and Imperial College London (ICL) set out, aspart of Healthier Hearts and Lungs, their joint commitment to develop anintegrated childrens hospital network for north- west London and a newacademic centre for child health. Following the transition period fullintegration, with a single governance structure will take place on the 1stApril 2022.

Youwill have access to Clinical nurse educators in all our paediatric areas. OnGrand Union ward you will be supported to build your confidence and experienceby caring for patients throughout their entire Bone Marrow Transplant journey.There are multiple opportunities to gain new skills, such as blood transfusionadministration. Due to the complex nature of the care, IV and oral medicationcompetencies are desirable. If not already acquired, it will be an expectationthat these competencies will be completed, alongside the education team, whilstin post.

Ability to communicate exceptionally both verbally and in writing Willingness and ability to develop clinical skills Maintenance of confidentiality Ability to solve problems and use initiative Competency in medication administration including IV drug administration OR a willingness to undergo training Basic IT skills Knowledge of the NMC code of conduct Awareness of the current developments in nursing

Competency in cannulation/venepuncture Competency in using central venous lines to take blood samples and administer medications Blood transfusion competency Flexibility Organisation Skills
