NHS Blood and Transplant is an ambitious organisation that wants to be the best organisation of its type in the world. We’re looking for a Media and PR Manager who cares about making a difference, has a keen eye for quality and can expertly advise colleagues on reputational issues and handle the trickiest media enquiries. Your influence and skills will contribute to the organisation’s success and the lives we save and improve on a daily basis.

Note: This role offers hybrid working, requiring 2-3 days a week in one of our London-based offices or donor centres. The base location can be either the Tooting or Colindale Centre.

Main duties of the job

In this role you will be responsible for leading a media and PR team to deliver high quality, evaluated communications to recruit new donors and showcase the work of NHSBT, build our profile and protect our reputation. Your responsibilities will include:

Lead NHSBT media initiatives, including proactive strategies for national and local announcements, ethnic minority-focused media, consumer media coverage, and engagement with new channels to attract a diverse audience, alongside reactive tasks such as call handling, rebuttals, and media monitoring. Working with colleagues across the organisation to source stories and information and with colleagues across the communications mix to deliver joined up and effective communications plans. Building influential relationships with key journalists while serving as a trusted advisor to the Senior Leadership Team, Executive, and Board on media handling.  Ensuring NHSBT has the appropriate case studies, influencers, and relationships to recruit donors, particularly from ethnic minority backgrounds, supported by effective systems and databases. Leverage audience insights to utilize the right stories, channels, and spokespeople to inspire and educate our key audience. Supporting the Head of Media & PR to develop and implement NHSBT’s organisation wide media and PR strategy to support delivery of the organisation’s aims and objectives and meet the annual KPIs set in the communication strategy.

You will be required to travel and spend time away from base, which will involve working irregular hours and overnight stays when required, with prior notice

About You

Experience and Knowledge

Extensive experience in communications management, involving press and media handling and the use of social media Experience of project managing communication projects using a variety of communication techniques and channels and producing communication plans Experience in managing proactive and reactive media and PR for marketing campaigns, with a strong understanding of handling national and regional press, radio, online, and broadcast media, including acting as a spokesperson for the organization. Knowledge and experience in evaluating media and PR activity, along with a proven track record in developing communications policies and processes or improving an organization’s media and PR services. Experience of working with Information Technology using Microsoft Office packages (Word, Excel and PowerPoint)

Qualifications and Training

Master degree level qualification or equivalent professional experience in marketing/comms/media related area Relevant postgraduate degree/professional qualification or equivalent professional experience. Demonstrates commitment to own continued professional development (CPD)
