Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (UHSx) for a highly experienced senior nurse to join the Cancer Division. The division was formed when UHSx was created following the merger of two Trusts in 2022. Serving a population of , UHSx is now the second biggest provider of cancer services in England.

With services based at all four acute hospital sites and a Cancer Centre at the Royal Sussex County Hospital (RSCH) in Brighton, plus a satellite radiotherapy service at Eastbourne District General Hospital, the division has responsibility for the following clinical specialities: Oncology (including Systemic anti-cancer therapies & radiotherapy) , Clinical Haematology, Palliative & End of Life Care, the Faster Diagnostic Standard nursing team, breast surgery and screening for Sussex and the CVAD service for the Trust. The division is also responsible for trust wide cancer management and performance.

Main duties of the job

Reporting to the Chief of Division, the Divisional Director of Nursing & Allied Health Professionals works in partnership with the Chief of Division and Divisional Operations Director. These three roles, 'Divisional Triumvirate', have operational accountability for the workforce, service delivery, clinical quality and safety and financial control for the division. Together as a team, the Triumvirate are responsible for defining divisional and Trust wide objectives relevant to cancer, palliative and End of Life Care to meet corporate goals and for ensuring that quality standards are met, and performance addressed where this is not the case. The post holder will also take a lead role in developing the workforce and strategic plan for the new cancer centre planned at the RSCH site.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Key responsibilities will include:

Overseeing a framework of robust clinical governance, safety and quality across the division; Ensuring safe staffing reviews are undertaken; Line management and professional leadership of the nursing, AHP and healthcare scientists workforce, Lead for CQC oversight and the divisional lead for the Trust Quality and Safety Improvement Plan (QSIP) Act as our divisional lead for complaints and all matters relating to patient experience. Will be accountable for providing excellent professional and clinical leadership within nursing services. Lead alongside the multidisciplinary team to ensure safe, personalised care that is responsive to feedback from our patients and staff. Work collaboratively and provide leadership and support for nurses, support staff and AHPs within the division, ensuring that patients and staff are safe, cared for and listened to.

You will take lead responsibility for clinical governance and risk management ensuring processes are in place for monitoring, management and analysis of incidents and will be required to support the Chief Nurse with the delivery of a wider corporate nursing and quality agenda.

Person Specification

Experience and Qualifications

Essential

Registered Nurse/Midwife, 1st Level /1st Level Degree Masters level qualification or evidence of post graduate study A comprehensive / specialist understanding of the safeguarding children and adults processes

Desirable

Leadership training Management training Management qualification, or additional short courses or experience to Doctorate level

Skills

Essential

Considerable experience at senior nurse level ( Matron) in an acute Health Care setting Extensive knowledge of complex and acute (staff management/financial management and change management) including sound knowledge of Public involvement. Extensive knowledge of and experience in the operational management of hospital services. Sound understanding of Health Service policy
