The Mental Health division of Nottinghamshire Healthcare Foundation Trust comprises of three directorates: Adult Mental Health, Mental Health Services for Older People and Specialist Services. More than 2,800 dedicated staff provide vital and integral healthcare services for our patients in a variety of settings, ranging from community through to acute wards, covering a vast geographical area.
The Liaison Psychiatry service for working age adults is an established and well-respected team that provides a liaison psychiatry service to Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) at the QMC and City Hospital campuses on a 24-hour basis. The focus of our work includes urgent assessments in respect of self harm and mental health emergencies, advice and support to wards in respect of patients experiencing mental health problems and also work in areas such as Medically Unexplained Symptoms.
Main duties of the job
We undertake comprehensive assessments and work to agree therapeutic plan of care and risk management strategy. We also offer short-term follow-ups using brief interventions. Part of the role will include rotations within A&E to triage and assess patients, presenting with a wide range of conditions and acting as a first point of contact. This will enable patients to be seen in more timely manner and help with the overall patient experience.

Job description
Job responsibilities
To determine management plans, and where appropriate deliver short term psychological treatments, for people who are referred following self-harm or as psychiatric emergencies based upon a comprehensive psychosocial, risk and needs assessment of that individual.
To determine whether people who present with suicidal behaviours or thinking are safe to be allowed to leave the general hospital.
To manage as appropriate to reduce risk.
Provision of psychological treatment/support to people who have physical illness or difficulties and associated mental distress or disorder in order to improve the functioning or quality of life of that person.
We have a strong focus on working together as a team and on patient and carer satisfaction and the strength of our clinical work is demonstrated by our having achieved Psychiatric Liaison Accreditation Network (PLAN) accreditation.
We proudly offer a thorough and robust induction package to this role and we ensure that all new starters are given enough training and time spent as a supernumerary staff member to ensure that they are comfortable in the role before they are expected to work autonomously. We provide an excellent system of supervision to ensure that practitioners are always supported in their decision making. As such, you do not need to have previous experience in liaison psychiatry to be able to apply for this job.
When fully established in this role, key areas of performance will include effective team working skills, effective written and spoken communication, being able to work under pressure to deliver compassionate and person centred care and be able to carry out sound risk and mental health assessments.
Essential criteria include a professional qualification and registration (nurse or occupational therapist), appropriate mental health experience and a commitment to reflective practice and learning and development.
We are primarily seeking Full Time applicants, however part time applicants will still be considered.
Our service operates 24/7 and night shifts would form a part of the working pattern.
