Leeds has a long history of supporting and training international nurses and midwives wishing to practice in the UK. In 2022 Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust launched an NMC Examination Centre in the heart of the city, providing Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE)

We are seeking dynamic and experienced registered Midwives to join our Midwifery clinical assessment team. We are continuing to develop our capacity to examining international midwives who wish to practice in the and we would like you to join us.

The ideal candidate will have an assessment qualification and experience of assessing and teaching within a healthcare setting.

We run a 7-day service and can offer full & part time opportunities. This is a substantive contract. You must have a current midwifery registration with the NMC. Previous applicants should not apply.

Main duties of the job

The primary purpose of the role will be to support and examine registered and unregistered staff in their clinical practice and observe competence set by the regulatory bodies, to meet the standards required to deliver high quality evidence based care for service users.

To succeed in this role, you will need to be passionate about education and understand the importance of growing our workforce in the NHS. You will be a team player with a focused and innovative approach to problem-solving whilst not compromising quality and be able to work under pressure managing a busy and varied workload. The role demands excellent communication and administration skills and an ability to successfully balance competing priorities.

Your personal development is also a priority, support will be provided for continuous professional development (CPD) to achieve NMC revalidation.

It is expected that you will have at least 2 year's experience of UK healthcare systems.

The role of the Midwifery Clinical Assessor role is essential for the organisation to ensure nurses and midwifes and Allied Health Professionals work within the governing standards set by professional and regulatory bodies.

Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS trust NMC Competence Test Centre (CTC) will be amongst 5 Competence Test Centres in the country. The Leeds CTC will enable professionals who have trained overseas and those returning to practise after significant time away to demonstrate that they have the skills and knowledge to care for people safely and effectively.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) uses Test of Competence (ToC).

You will be involved in organising and running Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE) within the Leeds Competence Test Centre.

The job holder will support, assess and examine registered and unregistered staff in their clinical role and competency, to meet the standards required to deliver high quality evidence based care for service users.

To carry out support activities, including skills administration, marking and moderation, skills curriculum development and the development of skills packages including where appropriate use of technology (to monitor each assessment station set prior to examination).

The job holder will facilitate the development of clinical staff both registered and unregistered.

The job holder will support the assessment of the quality of clinical and other practice learning environments and implement interventions for improvement.

The job holder will support the development of clinical practice mentors and key trainers, providing supervision through on-site support and continuous professional development activities.

The job holder will support the development of interdisciplinary and whole service working. As a role model they will promote the sharing of good practice and delivery of high quality, effective and efficient care.

To support, educate and develop registered and unregistered staff in their clinical role and competencies in order to deliver high quality evidence based care for service users.

The post holder will contribute to the planning, implementation and evaluation of education and training of registered and unregistered nursing staff.

They will work in collaboration with the senior management team to maintain and project the vision and objectives of the service and ensure that they are embedded in practice.

They will identify and celebrate good practice and share with local and Trust teams.

The post holder will lead by example; will be responsible for disseminating good practice and actively challenging assumptions, practice and performance where appropriate.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Leadership

Support in providing leadership to the clinical team.

Clinical

Work in Partnership with Head of Nursing, Service Managers, and Moderators in the development of departments practice, reflecting NMC, LTHT strategic education and workforce delivery plans.

Contribute to the training needs analysis for individuals and clinical need.

Responsible for the direct delivery of clinical education (this will include the teaching and demonstration of a range of clinical skills and medical devices.

Provide high quality care as an expert practitioner and act as a role model and resource for advice, support and guidance

Deliver complex information to patients and staff

Act in accordance with the relevant professional code NMC: Adult, Child, Midwifery, Mental Health and Learning Disability.

Fulfil the requirements as directed by the Nursing and Midwifery Council to maintain and revalidate registration

Ensure and promote the maintenance of a safe, clean and secure working environment

Assist with maintenance of accurate training records using LTHT documentation and electronic staff records (ESR)

Undertake duties in the departments as and when required by service demands or candidate/ patient need

Act in such a way that safeguards the health and wellbeing of children and vulnerable adults at all times. Is familiar with and adheres to, the LTHT safeguarding policies.

Raise concerns with regards to risk, danger, malpractice or wrong doing by following the LTHT Whistleblowing policy and supporting processes.

Supervise clinical staff to promote the delivery of excellent clinical standards

Provide a visible clinical lead and role model to the nursing and wider team by delivering high quality compassionate care as an expert practitioner

Ensure that documentation standards are maintained in accordance with NMC, Exam Boards, HCPC and LTHT guidelines, whether written or computerised.

Contribute to the maintenance of detailed and accurate records regarding staff education, including monthly and quarterly reports;

Contribute to the development and evaluation of educational programmes to ensure clinical areas are able to achieve and maintain an accredited educational learning environment for all students, registered and unregistered staff;

Collaborate with other members of the team in clinical areas and departments to ensure that the provision of education and training is clear and robust.

Mentorship and supervision of junior staff;

Liaise with outside agencies in the development of suitable education and training opportunities for staff;

Support staff to deliver evidence-based practice and research activities to further enhance patient care;
