Description

This is an exciting opportunity to join a well-established service with a national and international reputation, which is currently at 34 inpatient beds as well as daycare and outpatient services.

The successful candidate will contribute to the ongoing development of the service, providing clinical expertise in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team. He/she will be working with and supported by an experienced Associate Specialist and will be responsible for the psychiatric and medical management of patients, including patients detained under the Mental Health Act.

You will be working as part of a highly talented and close multidisciplinary team of eating disorder professionals. The support you will provide will enable young people to help themselves recover from their disordered eating.

We welcome both privately-funded and NHS patients for eating disorder treatment at Schoen Clinic Newbridge.

Principle Duties

The role for the Consultant Psychiatrist will be on a full or part-time basis (number of working days is flexible) for our eating disorders hospital for children and young people in Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham.

Medical assessment of patients Psychiatric assessment including eating disorder and non-eating disorder psychopathology Formulation of complex cases with medical and psychiatric needs Risk assessment and management for the medical and psychiatric components of the disorder Taking a leading role in the monitoring and treatment of physical complications of eating disorders in collaboration with other health care professionals (nurses, dieticians, physicians, paediatricians, general practitioners, etc) Attend the clinical MDT meetings as well as take part in MDT discussions around high-risk patients Participate in multidisciplinary discussions regarding the most appropriate treatment settings for patients Implementation of guidelines Treating and monitoring of psychiatric aspects of eating disorders, including core psychopathology and psychiatric co-morbidities, such as depression, obsessive-compulsive disorders, borderline personality disorder and autistic spectrum disorders Prescribing, which extends beyond the usual psychiatric formulary, and appropriately monitoring medications (according to relevant NICE guidelines) Using the Mental Health Act as appropriate in the management of eating disorders and general psychiatry To actively promote the key values of our eating disorder services, which include evidence-based treatment, collaborative multidisciplinary teamwork, coordinated care with other services, and efficient risk management Work together with clinical and operational colleagues to oversee the team's overall clinical performance Work closely with clinical and managerial leaders to improve and develop services.

Skills

Key Skills & Experience 

You will have specialist registration with the General Medical Council and a license to practice as well as the following:

Essential

On Specialist Register or within 6 months of expected CCT date MB BS or equivalent medical qualification. Meets Royal College of Psychiatrists criteria for appointment to the post of Consultant Approved Clinician status or willingness to achieve this Knowledge of the physical complications of eating disorders and their management

Desirable

MRCPsych or equivalent medical qualification Qualification or higher degree in clinical research, management, or medical education.

Experience

A minimum of one years’ experience of eating disorders as a higher trainee or equivalent Experience in the psychological and pharmacological management of eating disorders and co-morbid conditions Experience of the management of re-feeding in severely underweight patients Experience of a variety of psycho-therapeutic approaches used in the treatment of eating disorders

Personal

Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills and willingness to work as part of a multidisciplinary team Excellent organisational and communication skills
