We are seeking to recruit to the post of Biomedical Science Assistant - Higher Level (HBSA) to be based in the Pre-Analytics department at the Northern General hospital. As an HBSA, you play a crucial role in supporting the efficient functioning of the healthcare laboratory by performing many of the pre-analytical procedures on pathological samples.

This also includes tasks such as data input, retrieval, issuing reports and other general laboratory duties. Attention to detail is paramount as you ensure the accuracy of results and maintain the integrity of samples.

Please note, this role will involve working core hours spread between 08:00 - 20:00, Monday to Sunday.

Main duties of the job

To assist scientific staff in laboratory activities. Pre-analytical processing of samples to include the receipt, preparation and process. To deal with deliveries and distribution of post, distribution and storage of consumables and handling/management of waste within the department. To perform duties associated with the Specimen Collection Team which is responsible for the transfer of a wide variety of samples taken around the Trust back to the main laboratory To store, retrieve and dispose of biological material according to the relevant procedures. Deal with direct queries from medical staff, nursing staff and other service users including telephone enquiries and taking appropriate action as necessary. Exchanges information with colleagues and service users, specimen requirements for laboratory tests. Take appropriate action on non-conformity to standard operating procedures, minimum requirements for specimen acceptance.

Qualifications

Essential

GCSE (or equivalent) in Maths and English at level C/4 or above Level 3 qualification NVQ, 2 A-Levels, Apprenticeship or IBMS Certificate of Achievement (Part I) plus Significant laboratory experience or Extensive laboratory experience in the relevant discipline

Ability to follow and work to Standard Operating Procedures and Policy Understanding of job content Ability to work with other colleagues to improve and develop working practices

Experience with a range of laboratory techniques Previous NHS laboratory experience
