Job summary

As part of the London Spinal Cord Injury Programme, King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and St George's University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust seek to jointly appoint a Paediatric Spinal Cord Injury Clinical Link Practitioner. This is an exciting role that will be hosted at King's College Hospital for the two major trauma centres/neurosurgical centres in South London. The role involves working across South London providing support, sharing resources and expertise to develop equity of access and provision of paediatric spinal cord specialist clinical advice. This role will ensure that high-quality, patient-oriented care is provided for children diagnosed with spinal cord injury, both as a result from traumatic and non- traumatic events.

The post holder will work collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary teams in the planning and development of a more integrated service for children across primary, community and secondary care in their sector.

The post holder will be a champion for children's participation ensuring that they and their families are actively engaged and listened post holder will provide strategic clinical insight and leadership to facilitate and support the development and adoption of agreed Spinal Cord Injury patient pathways for children in London and ensure the delivery of agreed clinical standards.

Main duties of the job

To provide high-quality, patient-oriented care for patients diagnosed with spinal cord injury, both as a result from traumatic and non- traumatic events. To work collaboratively across the London system for the benefit of SCI patients, staff and families supporting an integrated networked model of care as part of a wider team of staff and work with the Outreach teams at the Spinal Cord Injury Centres to provide support, education and training for medical, nursing and therapists' teams and other healthcare professionals involved with direct patient care.

The post holder will work collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary team in the planning and development of a more integrated service for patients across primary, community and secondary care.

The post holder will be involved in pre and post operative management of children with spinal cord injury and in finding appropriate rehabilitation placements both inpatient or outpatient in specialist Spine rehabilitation units eg, Stanmore, Stoke Mandeville Hospital.

The post holder will contribute to advancing the body of knowledge through education, research and audit with the aim of improving access to treatment and rehabilitation for all patients, across all age groups and with coexisting comorbidities.

Work with Multidisciplinary teams at Spinal Cord Injury centres, Major Trauma Centres, neuroscience centres, oncology services, Regional Spinal Networks and community/primary care settings in order to deliver expert specialist care to children who have sustained a spinal cord injury (traumatic) or develop a condition impacting a normal functionality of the spinal cord (non-traumatic)

Ensure that expert clinical knowledge and care is shared with the Spinal Cord Injury centres, Major Trauma Centres, neuroscience centres, oncology services, Regional Spinal Networks, primary care providers and community providers along the entire lifelong patient pathway.

Ensure that staff, patients and their families are fully informed and supported by providing clinical and social support pre and post discharge from the acute settings.

Establish clear lines of communication within the specialist teams at Spinal Cord Injury centres, Major Trauma Centres, neuroscience centres, oncology services, Regional Spinal Networks and community/primary care settings to ensure cohesive multidisciplinary management of patients.

Link with health and social care teams across the ICSs both internal and external to the acute care provider in order to increase knowledge and facilitate the care.

To consistently evaluate the impact of the role across the SCI system providing reviews, reports and data analysis to the overarching programme as a wider part of SCI Transformation.

Essential

Relevant professional qualification AHP, eg . Occupational Therapist/ Physiotherapist/ RN (child) Teaching and assessing in the clinical environment or equivalent teaching qualification Evidence of Continued Professional Development in specialist field of practice. 1st Degree and Masters level qualification or Willingness to start Master's Degree program within 12 months of appointment. Appropriate Safeguarding training level. Relevant Spinal Cord Injury course.

Desirable

Advanced physical assessment course. Specialist seating skills Bladder and bowel management training. Member of or previous involvement with a spinal injury charity.
