Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for a senior Physiotherapist to develop, co-ordinate and ensure effective delivery of a highly specialised breast physiotherapy outpatient service working alongside the sarcoma specialist physiotherapist lead to also assist in delivery of the sarcoma service

The successful candidate will have responsibility for a clinical caseload, including training for participation in a weekly Nurse/AHP Follow Up sarcoma clinic using their strong clinical reasoning skills to develop and provide individualised programmes of care. They will manage junior staff and also coordinate and supervise Therapy Assistants, and students working across these areas.

The successful candidate will be expected to provide advice, education and training within the Rehabilitation Department and the wider Trust. This includes supporting staff development, clinical teaching of staff and undergraduates who are on placement. They will also be involved with service development and improvement therefore it is essential that they are proactive and forward-thinking.

Main duties of the job

The Band 7 Physiotherapist will provide a high-quality efficient Physiotherapy service to breast and sarcoma patients within the Christie NHS Foundation Trust

They will provide supervision and education to junior staff and students and will contribute to delivering in-service training to the wider rehabilitation team.

They will assist with the promotion and development of the Physiotherapy service as well as research involvement for AHP's.

Job responsibilities

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

CLINICAL

1. To co-ordinate and ensure effective delivery of highly specialised physiotherapy treatment to breast and sarcoma outpatients within the hospital, using advanced clinical reasoning skills to develop and provide specialist individualised programmes of care.

2. To be responsible for the modernisation of provision and organisation of the physiotherapy exercise class for patients undergoing radiotherapy to the breast.

3. To provide manual physiotherapy treatment to breast and sarcoma oncology patients.

4. To accept clinical responsibility for a designated caseload of patients.

5. To assist and provide cover for the sarcoma service working with the sarcoma physiotherapist, including participation in the AHP and Nurse led Follow Up clinic and being a key worker for those patients with physiotherapy needs alongside the sarcoma lead

6. To train and supervise student physiotherapists, junior staff and assistants. This will include the use of formal appraisal documentation.

7. To provide specialist physiotherapy advice and input at MDT meetings, clinics and case conferences.

8. To use advanced communication skills when providing and receiving all patient related information.

9. To be responsible for the safe and competent use of all physiotherapy equipment and ensure that junior staff, assistants, physiotherapy students, carers and other health care professionals attain competency prior to use.

10. To undergo key worker lymphoedema training to be able to treat breast cancer patients.

11. To undertake line managing responsibilities for more junior staff.

12. To produce timely and informative reports and discharge summaries for other agencies, GPs, consultants, social services, primary care colleagues to ensure effective and seamless pathways of care.

13. To review patient breast information to include an electronic format

14. To inform patients of activity schemes/initiatives including online platforms and activity and lifestyle apps

PROFESSIONAL

1. To be fully aware of and comply with the rules of professional conduct set out by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy/other appropriate professional body.

2. To be professional, legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of your own work including the management of patients in your care.

3. To ensure a high standard of patient care by developing, implementing and reviewing clinical standards relevant to the work area.

4. To be responsible for remaining up to date with new developments through ongoing continuous professional development.

5. To work within the guidelines of the policies, procedures and standards of The Christie NHS Foundation Trust.

6. To be an active member of the in-service training programme.

7. To disseminate knowledge of physiotherapy treatment of breast and sarcoma cancer in an oncology setting by participating in the organisation of and presentation at courses, study days and conferences locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.

8. To undertake the measurement and evaluation of clinical practice through the use of evidence based projects and audits and to initiate and implement change to working practices and policies where this will result in improved patient care/performance across the trust.

9. To input into research into specific areas of clinical practice for the benefit of the service.

10. To demonstrate a sound understanding of clinical governance and risk management.

11. To provide a physiotherapy contribution into multidisciplinary service delivery and policy projects within the trust ( implementation of NICE guidance documents)

ORGANISATIONAL

1. To be responsible for a designated area of work as agreed with the Rehabilitation Unit manager and Sarcoma Physiotherapy lead

2. To prioritise workload, balancing patient related and professional demands and ensure that these remain in accordance with the department as a whole.

3. To comply with the organisational and departmental policies and procedures and to be involved in reviewing and updating these as appropriate.

4. To participate in the Trusts mandatory training programme.

Physiotherapy Degree or equivalent AHP/Nursing degree State registration
