Job summary
The Department of Thoracic Surgery offers individualised patient care across the full spectrum of general thoracic surgical practice, serving a large population with dedicated clinics in Leicester, Burton, Kettering, Northampton and Peterborough. Our surgeons contribute as core members of the Lung Cancer, Mesothelioma, Lung Volume Reduction, Sarcoma and Neuroendocrine Tumour multidisciplinary team meetings. There are seven operating lists per week, at Glenfield Hospital. Patients are cared for postoperatively in a dedicated thoracic surgical unit, including a specialist high dependency care.
We are one of the leading UK centres for the surgical management of malignant pleural mesothelioma and emphysema, with an extensive lung cancer and general thoracic practice. The Unit boasts an international reputation for research across these are currently four Consultant Surgeons in the Unit, who are supported by a team of 14 Medics.
Glenfield Hospital is a 600-bed centre of medical excellence for clinical services, teaching and research. There are close links to Leicester Medical School, including teaching of undergraduate medical students. Glenfield Hospital has, year on year, increased the number of patients treated, introduced service developments and expanded the range of treatments available. We have gained an excellent reputation for the quality of services we provide as recognised by the results in the Quality Health Patients Satisfaction survey.
Main duties of the job
To provide Consultant Thoracic Surgeon services at the University Hospitals of Leicester.
To ensure the provision of good standards of practice and care as described in the GMC Guidance 'Duties of a Doctor' are followed at all times; and that bad practice is reported.
To ensure that clinical practice is both effective and efficient and that appropriate monitoring of clinical care takes place.
To actively participate in audit.
To work with the CMG management team to ensure that services are delivered efficiently and reflect best practice with processes and governance to match - this may require new and flexible ways of working in the future.
To provide continuing responsibility for the care of patients under their care and for the proper organisation and functioning of clinical practice.
To work closely with other specialties, departments and outside agencies to deliver the objectives of the CMG.
To take responsibility for ensuring that critical clinical incidents, as defined in the Trust's 'Critical Incident Policy', are reported in a timely manner.
To participate in yearly appraisal and job planning process.
To undertake Mandatory & Statutory training as determined by the Trust and Clinical Management Group Responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness, and the proper functioning of the department;
Cover for colleagues' annual leave and other authorised absences.

The job plan is based on 10 PA, including theatre operating sessions per week. Additional PAs above the 10 basics will be negotiated on the basis of the needs of the service.
This will also be determined by theatre availability.
On-calls
There is a commitment to undertake on-call which is non-resident, 1 in 4, for Thoracic Surgery, including the management of cardiothoracic trauma.
Supporting Professional Activity (SPA)
It is expected that most consultants within the Trust will have PAs for Supporting Professional Activities (SPA) including CPD. PAs are allocated as a minimum to all consultants for SPA in order to support the requirements of revalidation which include activities such as participating in audit, CPD and mandatory training. This further 1 PA above PA will be available for SPA as part of the job planning process for further appropriate verifiable SPA
