Independent Domestic Violence Advisor

We have an exciting opportunity for an Independent Domestic Violence Advisor to join the Domestic Abuse Specialist Service in Brighton & Hove. This role is full time working 37.5 hours per week on a fixed term contract until 31st March 2025. The role is offered on a hybrid basis working between home, the community and our office in Brighton.

About the role:

This hybrid role is based in Brighton & Hove. Applicants will need to be able to meet regularly with clients and staff where required, and to attend the Brighton office for team meetings, training sessions and other requirements as they arise. There is a mandatory office attendance requirement with a minimum of 1 day a week.

As an IDVA you will:

Support the empowerment of survivors and assist them in recognising the features and dynamics of domestic abuse present in their situation Hold a caseload of varying complexity, prioritising high risk cases and providing a pro-active, short to medium term crisis intervention service Conduct comprehensive needs and risk assessments Provide individualized safety and support plans, advocacy, practical support and information Participate in the Multi-Agency Risk Assessment Conference (MARAC), acting as the voice of the survivor and delivering on actions agreed within the MARAC if needed. Use a person-centred, survivor-focused approach, being mindful of the effects of trauma and additional barriers to access that individuals may experience Work as a core member of the team, collaborating closely with colleagues and lead/specialist IDVAs to create meaningful pathways of engagement for survivors and ensure the service meets the needs of local communities. Work in partnership with colleagues within and beyond Victim Support to ensure that victims’ & survivors’ needs are met in a way that minimises them needing to retell their story, and with clarity as to the lead agency and responsibility for delivery of agreed actions Assist in delivering training, and provide consultancy and advice to other agencies as required

You will need :

A thorough understanding of the issues faced by those experiencing domestic abuse A thorough understanding of the principles of risk assessment, safety planning and risk management for survivors of domestic abuse and their children An understanding of safeguarding issues and the legal responsibilities surrounding these Experience of delivering services to survivors of domestic abuse and/or other vulnerable people Experience of working within a multi-agency and legislative framework Experience of managing a complex caseload, prioritising work and dealing with competing demands demonstrating an organised and methodical approach to work Ability to deliver individualised safety and support plans, demonstrating sufficient knowledge of criminal and civil justice remedies Understanding and knowledge of and active commitment to promoting equal opportunities and diversity Ability to self-reflect, identify own needs, and put in place effective self-care strategies
