Job summary

We are looking for a Band 6 Stroke Specialist Occupational Therapist to join our team to provide a high standard of occupational therapy to patients referred with Stroke and Neurological conditions in the acute hospital.

Main duties of the job

To provide a high standard of Occupational Therapy to patients referred with Stroke and Neurological conditions that have a life changing impact.

With support from the Clinical Specialist OT Team Leader, the post holder will take a specialist clinical role in the provision and development of an effective and specialised Stroke Occupational Therapy Service. This will involve specialist assessment and treatment including group work and specialist education and advice as required. The post holder will supervise junior staff and students as well as contribute to the teaching and clinical supervision of Occupational Therapists, students and multidisciplinary staff. The post holder will, on occasion, need to deputise for the Neurology Clinical Specialist / Team Leader undertaking any specific clinical and professional responsibilities in their absence day to day operational management and prioritisation of the ward/service caseload and Occupational therapy team. The post holder will be responsible for his or her own Continual Professional Development (CPD)

Job description

Job responsibilities

The post holder will be primarily based on the acute stroke unit but will also be required to undertake the assessment of Neurologically impaired patients, outlying on other wards. The post holder will undertake comprehensive Occupational Therapy assessments of patients by using both standardised and non standardised assessments to identify neurological deficits and assess the patients occupational performance.

The timing of the assessment will be driven by clinical need and with an awareness of targets and SSNAP. The post holder will be expected to use this assessment information to formulate treatment plans for patients and allocate treatment sessions as appropriate for both themselves and support staff. These decisions will take into account National standards for Treatment, Trust priorities and Occupational Therapy Department priorities.

The post holder will undertake daily therapeutic moving and handling with patients. The post holder must be skilled in the use of specialist equipment used for manual handling and therapeutic activities including use of plinths, wheelchairs, specialised seating, hoists, standing aids and adaptive equipment.

The post holder will be expected to carry out home and community assessments if required. They will plan and implement the assessment of a patient within the home environment in accordance with departmental and trust policies.

The post holder will be part of a weekend rota, which provides an Occupational Therapy Service Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays, to ensure the needs of patients are met 7 days per week.

The post holder will participate in the Occupational Therapy Departments supervision and appraisal programme and be responsible for their CPD.

The post holder will be responsible for the provision of training and advice to relevant multidisciplinary staff within the Trust. Along with the Band 7 Clinical Specialist/Team Leaders, the post holder will be responsible for the planning, organisation and delivery of a variety of activities and programmes related to the development and training of staff within the Occupational Therapy service, related specifically to the treatment of specialist conditions Stroke.

The post holder will be expected to supervise, educate and assess the performance of Occupational Therapy Students.

The post holder will work towards participating in policy development along with the OT Team leaders and Clinical Specialists/Operational Leads as well as contributing to the development, maintenance and review of standards of practice, protocols and procedures for the management of patients referred to the service.
