Why this job matters
The application of competition and regulatory law are fundamental to how BT does business and touches almost every aspect of how BT operates.
As a Senior Competition Lawyer in BT you’ll provide expert strategic competition and regulatory law advice on complex legal and commercial issues to senior stakeholders in the UK and provide legal support in other jurisdictions where BT Group is active. You will lead on the provision of risk-savvy and solution-focused input on a range of propositions; working with and coordinating business, finance, strategy, regulatory, and legal colleagues to achieve BT’s commercial objectives.
You will also partner with BT’s Regulatory Affairs team and, where appropriate, lead interactions with Ofcom in the UK, and colleagues in other jurisdictions, providing assurance in relation to the operation of the Commitments between BT, Openreach, and Ofcom.
What you’ll be doing
- You will be accountable to the Legal Director, Competition, Regulatory & Critical Projects & Commitments Assurance Director for leading on legal and strategic projects and the provision of UK and EU competition and regulatory law advice.
- You will identify and develop ways in which competition and regulatory law can be used to develop and enable BT’s strategic agenda, implementing appropriate solutions and corrective actions in relation to any risks of non-compliance.
- You will engage with external stakeholders including customers, Ofcom, and competition authorities in relation to competition and regulatory law matters.
- You’ll lead teams in the provision of legal advice in contentious competition and regulatory matters to achieve the best business outcomes, including advising on the merits of litigating against Ofcom, competition authorities, and third parties.
- You will initiate and provide training, education, and awareness activities for colleagues across BT, developing and contributing to best practice documents on competition law and regulation.
- You will be a leader in the Competition and Regulatory Law team, managing cross-functional project teams, as well as line management, supervision, and/or coaching of junior members of the team.
- You will lead coordination of the Commitments Assurance Office to monitor adherence to the Commitments BT and Openreach made to Ofcom.
The skills you’ll need
- To be an expert in EU and UK competition and regulatory law, with broader legal knowledge (commercial, corporate governance, litigation, etc.).
- To have substantial knowledge and relevant experience in the legal profession, covering a broad range of activities.
- A proven track record of leading on and supporting competition and/or regulatory litigation/proceedings.
- Strong commercial sense, understanding complex markets, and thinking creatively to meet commercial goals.
- To influence at all levels of the business, with strong communication and presentation skills.
- To work independently and collaboratively, ensuring consistent on-time delivery on commitments.
- Experience of managing direct reports and driving internal projects to improve performance.
- Qualified, registered solicitor or barrister with 5 years’ plus PQE (or equivalent legal professional qualification).
